Aamir Khan first met with his second wife, Kiran Rao on the sets of his film, Lagaan, in 2002. Although, they barely spoke to one another on the sets of the film, it was after two years when Kiran and Aamir started dating in 2004, and only after one year, the duo hopped onto the forever journey. And it was after nine years of their marital bliss that Aamir and Kiran welcomed their baby boy, Azad into their lives via surrogacy. Moreover, in 2021, Aamir and Kiran left their entire fanbase heartbroken by announcing their separation.
After Azad's birth, Kiran took a break, and she recently made her comeback with the movie, Laapataa Ladies. However, in a recent interview with Zoom, the filmmaker walked down memory lane and recalled the hard phase ahead of opting for surrogacy. Kiran shared that she always wanted to have a child, and she tried for five years and had undergone several physical health issues along with miscarriages. Kiran can be quoted as saying:
"The year that Dhobi Ghat was made was the year that Azad was born. And I had tried very hard to have a child. For five years, I had had a lot of miscarriages, a lot of personal, physical health issues. I was just finding it very hard to have a child. I was really keen to have a child, so when Azad was born it was… I didn’t have to make a decision."

Sharing that she wanted to raise her kid only, Kiran added that those were the best years of her life to witness her kid growing up, and she would never regret the same. In Kiran's words:
"I enjoyed having Azad so much. Those were some of the best years of my life. I’ll never regret not having made a film in 10 years. I have no regrets because I enjoyed it thoroughly."
Earlier, in an interview with NDTV, Kiran Rao stated that both she and Aamir were extremely worried about the result of their decision to divorce each other as in general, it mostly affects the kids. The filmmaker further stated that what helped them was the time of lockdown, which provided them with a lot of time to be with one another and hold hands during such a tough time. Kiran also shared that her little one also spends family time with her and Aamir, which includes pickleball and swimming, as well as spending time with the little one's grandparents, among others.
