Kunal Kamra has once again proved that he is hands-down the country's most controversial comedian at the moment. The comedian's recent stand-up has landed him in big trouble, leading to an open row between Kunal Kamra and Shiv Sena. For the uninitiated, the comedian's controversial stand-up gig was performed at Mumbai's famous comedy club, The Habitat Studio. As soon as the video was uploaded on YouTube, it created a stir on the internet. Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde's supporter, Murji Patel of Shiv Sena Party, filed an FIR against the comedian.
One can understand the seriousness of the situation by the fact that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a demolition drive at The Habitat Studio. Apart from the BMC officials, some workers of the Shiv Sena Party went to the Unicontinental Hotel in the Khar area and demolished it. As per the latest updates, Mumbai police have summoned Kunal Kamra over his controversial comments on the state's current CM, Eknath Shinde.
Coming to Kunal Kamra's comment about Eknath Shinde that has created all this fiasco, the comedian had indirectly labelled Maharashtra CM as a "traitor". Kamra also took a jibe at the 2022 rebellion of Eknath Shinde against his then-boss and leader, Uddhav Thackeray. Kamra modified the song, Bhooli Si Surat, from the movie, Dil Toh Paagal Hai and made some serious indirect digs at the politician. He said:
"Thane ki rickshaw, chehre pe daadi, aankho me chashma haaye... Thane ki rickshaw, chehre pe daadi, aankho me chashma haaye...ek jhalak dikhlaye kabhi Guwahati me chup jaaye...meri nazar se tum dekho gaddar nazar wo aaye... mantri nahi wo dalbadlu hai aur kaha kya jaaye... jiss thali me khaye usme hi chhed kar jaaye... mantralay se zyada Fadnavis ki godi me mil jaye... teer kaman mila hai isko baap mera yeh chahe."
Amidst all the backlash, Kunal Kamra dropped a post on Instagram, clearly stating that he wouldn't apologise for his remarks. He also added that he is fearful of the mob that has been giving him threats. The comedian also added that the politicians' inability to take a joke cannot change his right to freedom of speech and expression. Kamra's strong statement surprised many people as everyone thought he would be slightly defensive in his words because the controversy was getting way too ugly. An excerpt from his long note can be read as:
"Our right to freedom of speech and expression is not only to be used to fawn over the powerful and rich even though today’s media would have us believe otherwise. Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right."
Kunal Kamra was born on October 3, 1988, in Mumbai's Mahim and completed his schooling from a school in the same city. For graduation, he took admission to Mumbai's Jai Hind College and pursued a degree in commerce. However, he dropped out of college in the second year after he got an opportunity to work in a production house. The comedian worked as an assistant at Prasoon Pandey's ad film production house, Corcoise Films. Kunal Kamra worked there for the next eleven years, after which he ventured into stand-up comedy in 2013 and never looked back.

Kunal Kamra's row with Shiv Sena leader, Eknath Shinde isn't something we are witnessing for the first time. Time and again, we have seen him making controversial remarks on renowned figures and landing in legal trouble. One of the most famous controversies of Kunal Kamra that made him a household name across the nation is his argument with Republic TV's founder and anchor, Arnab Goswami, in 2020. The comedian questioned Arnab's journalism ethics while on an ongoing flight. After this, Air India, SpiceJet, and GoAir put a six-month flight ban on Kunal Kamra.
Another major controversy in Kunal Kamra's career happened in 2020 when he made an objectionable gesture to India's then-Chief Justice of India, Arvind Bobde. While criticising the Supreme Court's decision to grant bail to Arnab Goswami, Kamra posted a picture of himself showcasing a middle finger reference. Not everyone is aware of the fact that Kamra has also locked horns with Salman Khan. The comedian took a dig at the actor's 2002 hit-and-run case and 1998 blackbuck poaching case.
In 2022, Kunal Kamra's show in Gurugram was cancelled due to multiple objections from Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal supporters. It all started after Kamra challenged VHP to denounce Mahatma Gandhi's killer, Nathuram Godse. In the same year, the comedian received widespread backlash after he edited a video of a girl singing a song for India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his visit to Germany. Kamra replaced the original song with Peepli Live's iconic song, Mehengayi Daayan. So many more controversies have happened in Kunal Kamra's career, but he remains unbothered by them and continues to be "controversy's favourite child".
