From Dadi Amma Dadi Amma Maan Jao, Chanda Mama Door Ke to In Aankhon Ki Masti, Dum Maro Dum, Do Lafzon Ki Hai, Parde Mein Rehne Do, etc., whichever song she had crooned her voice for has been nothing but a blockbuster! In her entire career graph, you would hardly find any song that has failed to impress the critics or the listeners. The mention is of the one and only, Asha Bhosle! Initially, she was recognised as the younger sister of the ‘The Nightingale of India’, Lata Mangeshkar, but soon she made her own niche in the music industry. And the rest, as they say, is all history!
For the ones who don’t know, Asha Bhosle was born to Master Denanath Mangeshkar in the princely hamlet, Sangli. When she was nine, she had moved to Kolhapur with her family, after the sudden demise of her father. And that was the period when she had started singing in films with her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Lata ji and Asha ji are inseparable till date! Some time back, rumours had it that Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar were not on talking terms with each other. In an interaction with the Hindustan Times in 2016, refuting all the rumours about their differences, Lata ji had stated, “This talk of our differences has been blown out of all proportions over the years. We are sisters first and foremost, and forever. We were never rivals as singers. What Asha can do before the mike I can never do. I can never sing Piya tu ab to aaja or Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko the way she can. My point is, we had our own individual space as singers. Why would we be seen as rivals? Yeh bilkul galat hai.” (Also Read: Sargun Mehta Had To Convince Hubby, Ravi Dubey For A Steaming On-Screen Liplock With Nia Sharma)
She had further gone on to share, “People say all kinds of things about our relationship. There’s no fight between us. Until some years back we lived in adjoining flats and there was a connecting door between our homes. We were constantly in and out of one another’s homes. At a tender age Asha left home and got married. And she made a big name for herself. I’m very proud of her. We share a very healthy relationship. There is no stress. Whenever Asha has a show, she seeks my blessings first. I’ve heard her lyric-book has my picture in it. My relationship with none of my siblings is troubled. I fulfil the function of the eldest with all my siblings. I am fortunate to have such siblings.”
In the same interview, when Lata ji was probed to tell if she thinks that their stature as siblings never got their due, she had replied, “I disagree with that. Today in Maharashtra it’s not just me who’s recognised. We are known collectively as the Mangeshkar family. But yes, to an extent the belief that other trees cannot grow under a banyan tree is applicable to my family.” And how much does she rate Asha Bhosle as a singer, she had answered, “She didn’t become famous for nothing. She can sing every kind of song. Thank God she didn’t adopt my style of singing. If she had we’d have become competition for one another. She went on her own path. Yeh manna padega ki woh bahut badi gayika hai.” (Checkout: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's Hubby Abhishek Bachchan Hugs Her Ex Vivek Oberoi Letting Bygones Be Bygones)
