Mahesh Bhatt has been one of the most successful directors in Bollywood. He has delivered several entertaining movies at the box office over the years. From unique storylines and popular music to impressive performances, his films were the talk of the town in the 80s and 90s. However, after directing nearly 50 projects in his career, the filmmaker has decided not to direct any more films.
Mahesh Bhatt has been busy promoting the next film of his brother and filmmaker, Vikram Bhatt, titled Bloody Ishq, starring Avika Gor. During the promotions, he sat down for a conversation with the Indian Express, where he was asked whether he would direct a film or not. In his reply, Mahesh Bhatt said that the time has changed, and he has become 'outdated' to direct a movie. He was quoted as saying:
"This is a new age, a new vibrant dawn. I don't have the thirst to leave my footprints on the sands of time, which is paramount in the entertainment world. Those who make it, have an insatiable thirst to leave their footprints on the sands of time. Vikram has it, Avika has it, I am outdated, a has-been."

Mahesh Bhatt had previously announced that his 1999 film, Kartoos, starring Sanjay Dutt, would be his last project as a director. However, he returned to direct Sadak 2, starring his actor daughter, Alia Bhatt. It was a sequel to his film Sadak, released in 1991, starring his other daughter, Pooja Bhatt.
In the same conversation, Mahesh Bhatt revealed that he is in a 'gratifying phase' of his career. The Sadak director shared that he would mentor filmmakers to improve their art with the knowledge he has gathered in his career. He also credited his brother Vikram Bhatt for allowing him to mentor filmmakers. In his words:
"Nothing can be more gratifying than creating people. Vikram is a true protegee, who has provided me a space under the metaphorical Banayan tree where I sit down and for my fulfillment, give people who come to me, the courage to look inward."
