Mala Sinha has been one name in the history of Indian cinema who has been known for her extraordinary feat. She was one of the most beautiful actresses of the 70s and got married to Chidambar Prasad Lohani, who was a Nepali actor. According to a report by the Timeless Melodies, the duo met during the shooting of Maitighar, a Nepali movie back in 1966. Mala was known to stun her fans with her beauty and acting chops. However, did you know that she and her husband, Chidambar, stayed in different countries after their marriage?
It was on February 16, 1968, that Mala and Chidambar got married, and she then continued to pursue her film career in Bollywood. Chidambar had then returned to Nepal to take care of his estate agency business. Although both of them were in a long-distance marriage and in different countries, their marriage worked beautifully, and they were also blessed with a daughter, Pratibha Sinha. She also tried her hand at the Hindi cinema back in the 1990s. Mala's blockbuster movie was Pyaasa whose success made her famous pan Asia. As destined, a movie director from Nepal called her for Maltighar. It was life-changing for her as she met Chidambar, who was a customs officer and was handsome. Mala fell for his looks as she was shooting for the movie, and as fate had it, she managed to make a place in Lohani's heart.
Mala had penned a letter to Lohani after she came back to India post the shoot of Maltighar. She expressed her feelings, and the letter reached him a month later. Lohani reciprocated to the letter by flying to India where both of them got to know one another. After that, they decided to get married and Mala in an interview with Filmfare shared:
"My parents wanted me to get married as I had turned 26. Baba (father Albert Sinha) believed the industry boys were not trustworthy. Also, ego problems could creep in. Baba wanted a pahadi, a Nepali like us. Baba liked CP.”
Mala and Lohani had a Hindu and a Christian marriage back in 1968. Lohani was 86, when he passed away in Kathmandu in 2024. He reportedly battled pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease. He was last admitted to Annapurna Neuro Hospital in Maltighar where he was undergoing treatment before his demise. Lohani was known to have a great interest in music and was also in the Ministry of Finance and Industry. He had a government service and was also at the Ministry of Industry, where he as a director took charge of Biratnagar Jute Mill and Raghupati Jute Mill.
Mala Sinha’s journey is a beautiful mix of love, commitment, and a thriving career. She remains an inspiration, not just for her memorable roles on screen but also for how she balanced her personal and professional life with grace and strength.
