Mandira Bedi had met her late husband, Raj Kaushal in 1996. Mandira and Raj had tied the knot in February 1999, after three years of dating. The couple had welcomed their first child after 12 years of married life as they were blessed with a baby boy, Vir Kaushal. Nine years later, Mandira and Raj had adopted a baby girl, Tara Bedi Kaushal. When the family was living their happily-ever-after, fate decided to play its cruel role, and Raj breathed his last on June 30, 2021.
It was in March 2021, when Mandira Bedi had put her Madh Island home, Bougainvilla on Airbnb after reworking on it. After Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, who had put their Delhi home for Airbnb, it was Mandira Bedi to do the same. Mandira’s villa was earlier used as a set location and now, she has put it up for rent. Mandira’s sea-facing property has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a private pool and a space for reading.

Usually, when a house is made, we end up chopping down the trees, however, Mandira Bedi’s Madh Island home inspires us on how one can save trees and use them to beautify their home. The lawn of Mandira’s villa is a peaceful place that offers everything to everyone. It has a trampoline for kids, a swing along with a lounge area, a big swimming pool by the side of a funky black and white bar and years old trees intact at their place. The mixture of white paint and woodwork gives it a soothing vibe. The place is designed, keeping the trees in mind, giving the visitors a heavenly abode amidst nature.
The living room has a splash of colours yet keeping everything subtle. Brown cushiony sofas, a red lounger, and two blue ottomans with colourful cushions add a contrast to the vintage vibe of the room. The room also offers wooden furniture with a recliner placed alongside a wooden bookshelf, a mic and a spotlight lamp post, and a wooden dressing cabinet decorated with artistic statement pieces. However, the best part of the room is the day bed, which is placed right next to a window wall. The poster single bed is decorated with white curtains, plants, frames at the wall in the back and a set of colourful cushions.

Mandira Bedi’s Madh Island home offers 4 bedrooms to the visitors and each bedroom offers a different theme. One bedroom offers a view of the lawn outside with a swimming pool from the French windows. The room gives vintage vibes with a poster bed placed near a window, surrounded by wooden side tables on each side, lamp posts and plants. A lounger is placed right ahead of the bed over a rug with a wooden box. The cushions and pillows add colour to the vintage themed room.
One bedroom is made keeping a wood-and-white theme in mind. The room has a wall made of a wooden closet, dark wood and teal green sofa set, poster bed, wooden ceiling, and an old-school wooden table that reminds you of the 90s.
The blue and white bedroom gives a vacation on the beach feel. With rocks design sculpted on the walls, an arch behind the wooden bed, side tables, closet and dressing, the room has a soothing vibe to it. Outside the room has a setup of a table for two.
Again keeping the trees and plants intact, Mandira Bedi’s one of the bathrooms in the villa is an inspiration. She has kept the washbasin area simple with a round mirror mounted on the earth-coloured textured tiled wall, grey slabs, round basin and minimal things. On the wall opposite to this lies the actual beauty as the shower area has titles giving the vibes of the Rocky Mountains and adjacent to it is an area where a tree has been saved giving it an open roof to survive and it's base decorated with pebbles. Right at the back of it has an open roof, bathtub, making the overall experience surreal.

In a conversation with Indian Express, Mandira Bedi had talked about her Madh Island villa. Talking about the story behind the design of the house, she had said, “My stunning beach home at Madh Island has been primarily a shooting home for 14-15 years. Then in 2020, during the lockdown, while everyone was confined to their homes, I realised we have a beautiful place just a drive away but couldn’t use it because it was in no shape to live in.”
Mandira further shared the idea of revamping her beach home to make it worth staying. She added, “That’s when I decided to completely revamp it and transform it into a holiday home that would be the ideal getaway for me and my family. While I had an initial vision for Bougainvilla, I also allowed myself to go with the flow and the end result turned out better than I could have imagined. I wanted to create an uber-luxurious experience both in terms of the design and décor and the overall experience so that my family and the people who visited would want for nothing while staying here.”
Mandira Bedi had also shared what she feels is the highlight of her home. Sharing how every corner of her home is a reflection of her personality, Mandira had said, “I love every corner of the home because it is a reflection of me and my personality. While we had to redo some sections of the home entirely and bring in some new furniture and decor elements, I have consciously upcycled a lot of stuff we previously owned - for example, we have a teakwood cupboard my husband and I had made together for our first home about two decades ago. I had it re-polished and redone to keep at Bougainvilla, and now it serves as a sideboard in the poolside area of the home.”

Talking about the flooring of the house, Mandira Bedi had shared, “The house earlier had sleeper wood for the flooring when it was used for shoots, but when I began redoing the house, I wanted something beautiful and lasting. Bougainvilla now has yellow-mustard Jaisalmer stone on the flooring and the exteriors. We chose to redo the swimming pool area as well and now have a funky bar in black and white next to the pool.”
Mandira had also shared that she has used her sarees to add fabrics to the home. She had added, “Given my love for sarees, I have tried to integrate some beautiful fabrics into the home as well. I used sarees to make glittery, sheer curtains for the home and even framed gorgeous bits of Banarasi fabric that add more character to Bougainvilla and make it aesthetically pleasing.”
Talking about the four bedrooms of her beach house, Mandira Bedi had said, “Lastly, I think one of my favourite elements of the home are the four-poster beds we have in two of the bedrooms. Living in Bombay, it never crossed my mind to include four-poster beds as a part of my decor, but Bougainvilla’s high ceilings made it possible to experiment with these beautiful beds in this home.”
Mandira Bedi’s beach home in Madh Island is totally worth a visit. It is available on Airbnb and will cost you Rs 42,000 per night. With the house giving you every vibe from vintage to modern, classy to funky, it is indeed a perfect vacation home!
