Sanam is the only daughter of Iqbal Ratansi and is the apple of his eyes. She has two elder brothers. Zaheer Iqbal is her elder brother, a professional actor who has also assisted in several movies as a director. Her other brother, Mohammad Ladha, is a computer science graduate.

Sanam started her career working under Anaita Shroff Adajania at Style Cell. Here, she got the chance to style several big celebrities like Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan. Sanam shared that one of her friends introduced her to Anaita, and a brief conversation earned her the opportunity to work in the fashion industry. Talking about her interest in fashion, Sanam once said:
"I was very keen to get into styling but didn't know how it worked or know any stylists in the industry."
