It was on May 15, 1973, when Sampooran Singh Kalra, popularly known as Gulzar tied the marital knot with the love of his life and iconic actress, Raakhee Majumdar. While it was Gulzar's first, Raakhee was previously married to famous Bengali director, Ajay Biswas, but the two parted ways after some years of their marriage, which happened when they were kids. It was on December 13, 1973, when Gulzar and Raakhee welcomed their first child, a baby girl whom they lovingly named Meghna Gulzar.
Unfortunately, just one year after Meghna Gulzar's birth, her parents, Gulzar and Raakhee, decided to part ways. As per reports, Gulzar had told Raakhee about his orthodox mindset and clearly mentioned that he would want her to stop working in films after their marriage. Surprisingly, Raakhee, who was one of the leading actresses of that time, accepted his condition, but in her heart, she was hopeful that with time, she would convince Gulzar or even might end up working in his films. However, Gulzar stuck to his mentality and never allowed Raakhee to work in films. On the one side, the disappointment of not working in films was rising in Raakhee's heart, but an incident in Kashmir between her and Gulzar ended their marriage once and for all.
Gulzar and Raakhee were together in Kashmir as the former was directing the film, Aandhi. However, one night, when the whole cast and crew were partying, it was Sanjeev Kumar, who misbehaved with Suchitra Sen, after which Gulzar came in-between and escorted the actress back to her room. Raakhee was also there, and she didn't like how her husband, Gulzar, accompanied Suchitra to her room. When she objected to the same, Gulzar struck Raakhee, and the following day, the latter signed for Yash Chopra's film, Kabhie Kabhie, which served as the end of their marriage.
