Mithun Chakraborty, a.k.a Bollywood’s most-loved ‘Disco Dancer’ has been one of the evergreen actors in the film industry. While he simply needs no introduction, it is his charismatic personality, which is totally unmissable. He has worked in multiple languages of films, including Hindi, Bangla, as well as a few handpicked works in the South Indian film industry. Coming from a Naxalite background, Mithun has also made an active participation in the arena of politics and was one of the former members of the Rajya Sabha. However, despite reaching sky-height success, his journey has not been a bed of roses.
In a recent interview with ETC, Mithun Chakraborty opened up on his older days, when he was struggling to make a mark in the film industry. After relocating to Mumbai, he was totalled penniless, had no resources and was completely unaware of where he could source one square meal for himself. He recalled how he would sleep outside plush hotels, public parks, and gyms in the night, so that he could use their facilities in the morning. In his words:
“I won’t call them struggling days because a lot of kids might lose hope. Everyone struggles but my struggling has been so much that… I have come from the footpath, literally. There have been many days I spent in Bombay where I would sleep in Five Garden. Sometimes I would sleep outside a hostel. A friend of mine got me a membership at Matunga Gymkhana so I could use the facilities in the morning.”

In the same interview, Mithun spoke about how at times, he would figure out absolutely nothing throughout the day, rest aside even one single meal. He added how during these times, he wished to go back to Kolkata, but could not do so, because of his disturbed political background as a Naxalite. Moreover, he added feeling suicidal as a result of his futile attempts. He mentioned:
“There was a time when I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it. I even contemplated suicide at one point. I could not go back to Calcutta because of my political background and I couldn’t do something here.”
In one of his earlier interviews with Ananda Bazar Online, Mithun Chakraborty had recalled his simple and rather humble childhood days with his parents. He shared that both his parents came from strict orthodox beliefs, and as a result, he too, was brought up in a similar fashion. He also mentioned how even after making it big in the films, his humble parents were not ready to accept his stardom, and continued to live their simple, unbothered lives.

During his appearance on the show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs, Mithun had once spoken about the deep extent of discrimination he faced in the film world, as a result of his dark skin tone. Being comparatively wheatish than the expected fair heroes of films, Mithun, as a result, he would often get unexpectedly replaced and lose out on a number of opportunities due to the same.
