Nana Patekar has been one of the most versatile actors in the Hindi film industry. Beginning his career in 1978, he has featured in a series of critically and commercially successful films. At the same time, he has an outspoken personality. He has always been honest in his interviews and never shied away from directly answering any controversial question. The actor recently sat down for an interview with The Lallantop and recalled an old incident when Anil Kapoor replaced him in the 1989 film, Parinda.
Parinda follows the story of two brothers, one played by Jackie Shroff and other by Anil Kapoor. Nana Patekar revealed that he was supposed to play the part of Jackie Shroff in the film where his character is involved in the underworld. In turn, the role of 'Anna' played by Nana Patekar in the film was supposed to be played by Naseeruddin Shah. However, Anil Kapoor replaced him. When Nana Patekar confronted him, Anil said, "Why should I make Nana the star?" He further added:
"I was initially going to do Jackie's role. Naseer was supposed to play Anna (the part eventually played by Nana). Then Naseer backed out. Anil and I did a lot of rehearsals. I prepared for six months. I recently asked Anil, 'You asked Vinod to drop me from the film?' He said, 'I thought Nana ko kyu star banau main? It was obvious that you'd become a star had you played Jackie's part.' I told him, 'Didn't I tell you that whatever role you give me, I'd become the star anyway. Nobody would look at you."

Nana Patekar opened up about the alleged conflict and said everything is good between him and Anil Kapoor. However, at that time, Anil Kapoor was a star, and he asked Vidhu Vinod Chopra to remove Nana from the film, and the filmmaker did. After 3-4 months, the filmmaker again approached Nana Patekar, asking him to play the role of 'Anna,' and said that he would pay Nana as per the market price. Nana Patekar replied, saying he would pay him, but the filmmaker didn't do him any favour by offering that role.
The Welcome actor added that he has other issues with Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Consequently, whenever Nana Patekar meets him, he hopes that it is for the last time. He never worked with the filmmaker again. However, he directed Anil Kapoor in his 1994 film, 1942: A Love Story. Also, they starred together in Anees Bazmee's Welcome franchise, which made the duo popular.

Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor starred together in the 2007 film, Welcome and its franchise. They played the iconic roles of 'Udai bhai' and 'Majnu bhai.' Nana feels that his role would have been incomplete without Anil Kapoor, and vice versa. However, the duo won't be a part of the third film in the Welcome franchise, Welcome to the Jungle by Ahmed Khan. The Raajneeti actor said that the makers approached them with the script. However, he and Anil said 'No' because they didn't enjoy the story.
