Nayanthara is hailed as the Lady Superstar and certainly lives up to it. With several blockbuster films to her credit, Nayanthara is the highest-paid actress in the South Indian film industry. Born a Christian, Nayanthara changed her religion and converted to Hinduism in 2011. The actress's professional life has been a roller coaster. She once even left the industry but came back with a bang and proved her worth to the critics. At a time when most actors have requested their audiences not to address them with any title, the actress finally broke the silence on how she feels when she is called as the 'lady superstar'.
Nayanthara recently sat for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and revealed that she faced massive backlash over being called 'the lady superstar'. But this is not a name or prefix she gave herself, instead it was given by her fans. She had even requested her directors and producers not to call her by the prefix, but to no avail. In Nayanthara's words:
“Oh my god. That is another controversy. I mean the kind of backlash that I have had just for this title is unbelievable. I have to tell you this: for the past five or six years, I think, I have been telling all my producers, all my directors, and all the films I am doing; I literally beg them to not put that title card. Because I am so scared. My career is not defined by that title tag.”
Nayanthara added that the tag doesn’t define who she is, and her career is not dependent on it. However, she is extremely thankful to her fans for giving her that love and respect. Nayanthara further added:
"But, it means a bit to me, maybe because it's the love and respect that people have for me."
Nayanthara, lovingly called as the Lady Superstar, has come a long way in her career. With her recently released documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale, the actress shared the ups and downs she has faced during her initial years. The makers of the documentary recently shared a video clip on Instagram in which the actress was seen talking about the lowest point in her career. Despite the pain it may have caused, Nayanthara courageously shared her experiences, including the fat-shaming she endured during the making of the 2005 Tamil film, Ghajini. She recalled the cruel comments and how greatly they affected her, sharing:
"The lowest point was the film Ghajini. There were days when I used to see all the comments, and people were like, 'Why is she even acting? Why is she even there in the film? She’s so fat.'"
It was reported that Dhanush, who produced the film, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, starring Nayanthara, refused to sign the no objection certificate required for them to use the material in their upcoming Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. The actor-producer, Dhanush then sued Nayanthara for using a three-second BTS clip from the movie in her documentary, which led to the actress posting a three-page note bashing the former.
