Neena Gupta Shares She Hasn't Seen A Happy Marriage, Advices A Friend To Leave Her Husband

Just like her professional life, Neena Gupta’s personal life too has seen many ups and downs. Just like her profession, her personal life too had bounced back, when she had decided to get married at the age of 50. Her life was never a bed of roses. From her engagement being called off to falling for an already married man, and later giving birth to his child, Neena had faced it all. After all the hardships she has faced in her life, Neena Gupta failed to talk about a happy marriage in her latest interview.

At the times when extramarital affairs were ‘hawwwed’ and infidelity was a tabooed subject, Neena had given birth to her and cricketer, Vivian Richards’ lovechild, Masaba, out of wedlock. She raised her daughter single-handedly. It was in 2008, when Neena had tied the knot with a Delhi-based Chartered Accountant, Vivek Mehra, and had started her married life.

At the Times Literature Festival, in an interview with The Times Of India, Neena Gupta called happy marriages a rarity and shared that everyone has their own way of dealing with matrimonial issues. When asked about her thoughts on a happy marriage, Neena said, “I haven’t seen a happy marriage around me so I don’t know. It’s always full of compromises. I don’t have an answer to this question myself. Each individual has to make their own choice according to what they’re looking for in life."

Neena also talked about the incidents that she has not mentioned in her book, Sach Kahun Toh. Talking about how she had asked a friend to leave her husband and what had her friend replied, Neena said, “I told my friend, 'Your husband is womanising, leave him already.’ My friend said, 'Why should I? I will lose on a lot of things. When we were nothing, then I helped him, why should I leave now?’ What she told me about her relationship made sense to me."

In her book, Neena Gupta has penned a thought-provoking note about the people, who stay in unhappy marriages. She wrote, “It takes courage to end a marriage, no doubt about it. But it is also a big trauma because once two people unite, their whole existence, their families are held together by a thread. When this thread starts to weaken, everyone suffers. But is it worth staying in this mess, refusing to let the thread snap, just to appease society? To keep up appearances?" She goes on to answer her own question, "I don't know. I hope my readers will have more insight into this ..."
