Talking about controversy, Rachel Zegler, who is playing 'Snow White', is the one who has been receiving a lot of backlash for multiple reasons. Rachel Anne Zegler, aka Rachel Zegler is a popular Hollywood actress, who is best known for her work in Steven Spielberg's film, West Side Story. The actress won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress (Motion Picture Musical or Comedy) for her acting performance in West Side Story. Apart from this, Rachel has also worked in renowned films like Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Y2K, and Spellbound.

It was in 2021 when Disney confirmed that Rachel Zegler would be playing 'Snow White', and the announcement immediately received a wave of criticism from cinephiles on social media. The initial backlash was a racist one, as people started trolling Disney for casting Rachel who in their opinion, wasn't fit to play 'Snow White'. Famous conservative pundit, Ben Shapiro said in his YouTube video, "The name of the movie is Snow White, okay?!" and the video received 700,000 views. 

When Rachel Anne Zegler pointed out the sexist elements in Snow White's character and faced widespread criticism

Just when people were trolling Rachel Zegeler for the colour of her skin, some internet users dug deep into the internet and mentioned her old interview in which she took a dig at Snow White's character. For the uninitiated, back in 2022, Rachel sat down in a conversation with Extra TV and highlighted the sexist elements in Snow White's character. The actress said that most elements in Snow White's character are focused on her love story. She said: 

"A big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! WEIRD!"

Further, in the same interview, Rachel Zegler also added that she approached playing 'Snow White' as a character who should dream about becoming the leader she knows she can become. Rachel explained that she didn't approach the character with the element that 'Snow White' is solely looking and worried about just one thing, and that is her "happily ever after". The clip from Rachel's interview with Extra TV went viral on TikTok. Thus, it will be interesting to see whether the audience will accept Rachel Zegler as 'Snow White'.
