From movies like Manthan, Aakrosh, Arth, Mirch Masala, Waaris and many more, Smita Patil was a powerhouse of Bollywood. She had made her debut in the industry with the 1974 film, Mere Saath Chal. But it was her powerpack performance in the movie, Nishant, directed by Shyam Benegal, which had brought Smita ji into the limelight. Smita Patil had married Raj Babbar, one of the most sought-after actors of Bollywood. Raj ji had first met Smita ji on the sets of Bheegi Palkein and their first meeting ended up in a short clash. Who would have thought that the meeting will change their lives forever! When Raj ji had met the dusky beauty, Smita ji, he was already a married man with two children. Breaking all the societal norms, Raj ji had decided to marry Smita ji.

On December 13, 1986, the legendary actress had bid adieu to the world at the age of 31 due to childbirth complications. Her death was a big shock for all her fans and the film fraternity still mourns for the loss. On December 13, 2019, her husband, Raj Babbar took to his Instagram handle and shared a beautiful picture of her. Along with the picture, he posted an emotional note which could be read as “Today decades ago, you went away silently. Each year this day reminds me that you shall be missed more with every passing year.” It has been 33 years to her death, her family, fans and co-stars still feel the vacuum of her absence in their hearts.

On October 17, 2019, it was Smita ji’s birthday and her husband, Raj Babbar had posted a picture of her. Along with the picture, he had written a heartfelt note which could be read as “Remembering Smita on her birth anniversary. Though very short, the journey with her was so memorable. She went away silently. The sound of that silence however, shall never fade.” Smita ji’s son, Prateek Babbar had also wished his mother with a black-and-white picture. Coming back to Raj Babbar and Smita Patil’s love story, they had met on the sets of the film, Bheegi Palkein in 1982. In an interview with The Times of India, Raj Babbar had talked about his relationship with wife, Smita Patil. He had stated, “Smita entered my life unexpectedly. When I met Smita Patil for the first time, I realised there was depth to her character. She was generally very friendly and sought my advice once in a while. Gradually, we formed an intimate bond. My relationship with Smita was not the result of problems with Nadira - it just happened. Nadira was mature enough to understand my feelings. Juhi always loved being with Smita.”

Smita Patil had passed away in 1986 due to childbirth complications at the tender age of 31. Raj Babbar, who was madly in love with her was shattered by the news and had expressed his emotions in an interview with The Times of India. Talking about the same, he had quoted, “Smita left me forever. I was traumatised by her death. But I didn’t want my problems to affect the lives of those who counted on me.
