Born on December 29, 1942, as Jatin Khanna, Rajesh Khanna a.k.a, Kaka was the first superstar of Indian cinema. His success was unparalleled and so was his fan following.
The handsome Rajesh Khanna was in a steady relationship with actress, Anju Mahendru and after parting ways with Anju, Kaka had fallen head-over-heels in love with Dimple Kapadia. Smitten by her beauty, Kaka had proposed to Dimple and since she was a huge fan of him, Dimple didn’t think twice before accepting his proposal. In a throwback interview with Rediff, Dimple Kapadia had revealed how Rajesh Khanna had once scolded her when she had suggested him something and left her scared. Talking about working with him in the film, Jai Shiv Shanker, the first and the only film they had worked on together, Dimple had recalled the incident and had shared:
"It was very nice. The film shaped up very well, but there were financial problems. One time he was not well while we were shooting and he was supposed to come out on the balcony and wave to the press. I handed him my shawl and sunglasses and told him nicely, ‘Kakaji, when you go out, don’t look straight, your side profile looks better.’ He just looked up at me and said sternly, ‘Ab tum mujhe sikhaogi?"
In 1973, Dimple had made her Bollywood debut with Raj Kapoor's film, Bobby, which had become a huge hit. With the miniskirts, midriff-baring polka dots and the famous red swimsuit, Dimple had become an overnight sensation and youth icon. Dimple had quit acting after her marriage at Rajesh’s request. In 1982, Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna had got separated and after two years of their separation, Dimple had returned to acting and had featured in superhit films like Saagar, Rudaali, Gardish, Krantiveer, Dil Chahta Hai and many others.

Dimple had once stated that marriage with Rajesh was a wrong decision but the actress had never talked ill about him. In a 2017 article Dimple was quoted as saying:
“Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) has been consistently misunderstood. He’s a wonderful guy. I was far too young and impetuous when we married. We may have separated, but I still have tremendous regard and love for him. So don’t you dare try to extract any nasty statements from me. Kaka’s superstardom had to be experienced to be believed.”
For the unversed, Rajesh Khanna had madly loved his daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna and they were the only reason why he had never divorced Dimple Kapadia.
