Released on June 5, 2015, Dil Dhadakne Do is a Hindi-language comedy-drama film, which is directed by critically-acclaimed director, Zoya Akhtar. The story revolves around the Mehras, a dysfunctional family, who embark on a cruise to celebrate their parents' 30th wedding anniversary and find themselves reconciling amidst their tangled relationships. Zoya's vision for the film was to explore a more realistic portrayal of a brother-sister relationship. The ensemble cast included Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, and Farhan Akhtar.
Not only this, Bollywood superstar, Aamir Khan also provided the voice-over performance and narration. Dil Dhadakne Do beautifully captures the complexities of family dynamics and the power of self-discovery. The film completed 8 years of its release on June 5, 2023. However, there's an interesting scoop about the film's cast. The revelation about the original cast that the film’s director, Zoya Akhtar had in her mind will definitely stun you.

According to a report by Republic World, Zoya Akhtar had initially approached real-life cousins, Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan to portray the sibling characters of ‘Kabir Mehra’ and ‘Ayesha Mehra’ in her film, Dil Dhadakne Do. Kareena accepted the role, as she was eager to work with her cousin, Ranbir. However, when Zoya approached Ranbir for the same, the latter couldn’t give her dates. Despite his best efforts, Ranbir was unable to fix scheduling conflicts. Hence, he decided to decline the role due to dates.
The roles eventually went to Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra, who portrayed the sibling duo in the film. However, there’s no denying admitting that Priyanka and Ranveer’s performances were so on point, and not for a second it looked like they weren’t Zoya’s first choice for the roles that they played.

Other than the revelation about Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s casting, the report further stated that Bollywood’s handsome hunk, Hrithik Roshan was also considered for the role of ‘Sunny Gill’, which was played by Farhan Akhtar in the film. In addition to this, Katrina Kaif was approached for Anushka Sharma’s character, ‘Farah Ali’, in Dil Dhadakne Do. However, both actors turned down the offers for their respective reasons, which aren’t known to anyone as of now.
In the end, as we all know, Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma stepped into those roles and gave memorable performances. But, isn’t it interesting how not a single actor from Zoya Akhtar’s original cast agreed to be a part of the film, and the ones, who did, made it a timeless film? Well, the final ensemble delivered memorable performances that contributed to the film's overall impact on audiences.
