Born as Bhanurekha to the renowned actor, Gemini Ganesan and actress, Pushpavalli, Rekha is one of the most gorgeous and versatile actresses in Bollywood to date. From her birth out of wedlock, her father’s refusal to accept her, and forcefully getting into acting because of financial constraints, Rekha’s life has never been a bed of roses.
After doing small roles in South Indian films, Rekha made her Bollywood debut in the film, Sawan Bhadon in 1970. However, after a series of unsuccessful films, Rekha rose to fame with films like Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Khubsoorat and Umrao Jaan, and since then, there has been no looking back for her. From her complicated marriage to businessman, Mukesh Agarwal, flings with Jeetendra, Kiran Kumar, Vinod Mehra, Sanjay Dutt, and Akshay Kumar, and a scintillating affair with the already married Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha’s personal life has always garnered attention.
The actress, who is known for her beautiful looks and versatile roles, is also renowned for her controversial remarks, which starlets even today. The bold opinions, which none of the actresses of today’s generation could think of saying, Rekha has voiced four decades ago. In her biography, Rekha: The Untold Story, written by author and award-winning journalist, Yaseer Usman, she talked about her affairs.
The actress not only called herself a ‘badnaam’ actress with a rotten past but also pointed out how it was a sheer fluke that she never got pregnant, considering the number of affairs she had. In her words:
“It is sheer fluke that I have never got pregnant so far. I am not just an actress, but I am a badnaam actress with a rotten past and a reputation for being a sex maniac.”
In an old interview with a leading magazine back in the 70s, Rekha expressed her views on pre-marital sex and gave her candid take on it. Calling it a very natural process, the actress mentioned that a woman can't come really close to a man without making love. Elaborating on it, she said:

"It's very natural. And all those prudes who say that a single woman should have sex only on her suhaag raat are talking bull! Sex goes with love. You can't come close, really close, to a man without making love. And that's the only time when a man and a woman are their most natural self when they are in their birthday suit."
Out of all of Rekha’s linkups, her affair with Amitabh Bachchan has always been a hot topic of discussion in the glamour world. Speculations about Rekha and Amitabh’s affair had started on the sets of the film, Do Anjane, and it was one of the most controversial affairs of that time. It is even said that Yash Chopra’s film, Silsila, was literally the on-screen portrayal of Amitabh, Jaya and Rekha’s love triangle.
The casting of Silsila took many years as many leading ladies were approached for the roles opposite Amitabh. Yash wanted to cast Rekha and Jaya together with Amitabh, which was impossible, looking at the history of the trio. It took a lot of effort by Yash Chopra to even make Jaya listen to the script. However, it was the film's climax, when Amitabh came back to his wife, leaving his girlfriend, which made Jaya accept the role.
Rekha is one of the boldest actresses in Bollywood. Apart from her affairs, it is her sexual openness and modern ideas that got more ire towards her.
