Rekha is one such national award-winning actress who, despite her magnanimous success, has always been remembered more for her tainted love life. While her affair with an already-married Amitabh Bachchan was one of the most gossiped topics, the other incident that tainted her career was when her husband, Mukesh Aggarwal, committed suicide all of a sudden. It led her to be labelled as a national witch responsible for her husband’s death.
Rekha married Delhi-based industrialist and owner of the popular kitchenware brand, Hotline, Mukesh Aggarwal, in 1990. According to Rekha’s biography, Mukesh was a crazy fan of the actress and, surprisingly, also had a hidden mental health problem which he never spoke about in public. It was only after Rekha’s marriage with him that she finally learnt about his health problem. However, things turned completely topsy turvy when, after a few months of their marriage, Mukesh committed suicide by hanging from a fan using Rekha’s dupatta. And this instant unfortunate tragedy made things sour for Rekha.

Unfortunately, Bollywood has been known to succumb to an ugly media trial in unnatural deaths. Rekha was a victim of one such terrible media trial, where the entire nation woke up to label the actress as a national witch. Fans and people from the same fraternity left no stone unturned to hate the actress and call her a cold-hearted man-eater. Moreover, even Mukesh’s family members, including his mother and brother, started to hold the actress responsible for the death of Mukesh. Mukesh’s brother, Anil, even called Rekha a gold digger. He went to the media and openly proclaimed:
“My brother loved Rekha truly. For him love was a do or die attempt. He could not tolerate what Rekha was doing to him. Now what does she want, does she want our money?”
While Rekha’s massive audience, including her erstwhile fans, started to vilify her, it became all the more hurtful when members and colleagues of the film industry, too, started to take part in the blame game. Taking to an interview, the eminent filmmaker, Subhash Ghai shamed Rekha for bringing a disgrace to the film industry and even mentioned that her misbehaviour to such an extent made actresses take a bad name from then on. In his words:

“Rekha has put such a blot on the face of the film industry that it’ll be difficult to wash it away easily. I think after this any respectable family will think twice before accepting any actress as their bahoo. It’s going to be tough even professionally for her. No conscientious director will work with her ever again. How will the audience accept her as Bharat ki nari or insaf ki devi?”
Not just Subhash Ghai but many other colleagues and co-actors of Rekha from Bollywood also took part in the witch hunt game and started calling her names and other disgraceful remarks. For instance, Anupam Kher spoke at length about such an unfortunate incident and mentioned that Rekha had become a national vamp from then onwards and that he was unsure if he would ever interact with her if they met again. In his words:
“She’s become the national vamp. Professionally and personally, I think it’s curtains for her. I mean I don’t know how will I react to her if I come face to face with her.”

While the end of Mukesh and Rekha’s love story was tragic, it did not begin anything nearly the same. Mukesh was head over heels in love with Rekha, whom he had met through one of their common friends. And Mukesh, being quite headstrong and whimsical, proposed marriage to her within bare months of dating Rekha. After that, the duo drove to the nearest temple and got married in a hush-hush ceremony.
Rekha is one such actress who has suffered an ill fate in her love life. She faced her first heartbreak when she was romantically involved with an already married, Amitabh Bachchan. While for the longest time, the duo kept it a secret from the world and reportedly met each other secretively in the bungalow of one of Rekha’s friends. When Amitabh’s possessive behaviour towards Rekha as a co-actor misbehaved with her caught their attention, nearly everybody understood the reason behind the same. Afterwards, the gossip mills started churning out juicy stories about Rekha and Amitabh’s extra-marital affair. Moreover, she was also hailed as a home-breaking woman and was identified as a villain to Amitabh Bachchan's happy married life with Jaya Bachchan.
