Rahul Rawail, a renowned Bollywood director and editor, needs no introduction. He began his career with the movie, Gunehgaar back in 1980. Apart from that, he has worked on several other films, such as Mast Kalandar, Arjun, Betaab, Biwi-O-Biwi, and Anjaam, among others. Rahul had a close friendship with the later actor, Rishi Kapoor, and the former has also worked as an assistant director for Raj Kapoor. In a recent interview, Rahul shared how Rishi Kapoor once invited him to check out the Russian artists at his father's film set.
In a conversation with Friday Talkies, Rahul Rawali recalled how his life changed after his dear friend, Rishi Kapoor, invited him on the film set of Mera Naam Joker. He stated that he wanted to do nuclear physics and was preparing to leave for Canada.

However, once his exams were over, Rishi called him and said that his father, Raj Kapoor, was making the movie, Mera Naam Joker's next part, which would feature pretty Russian circus girls who were young and would wear short skirts. Rishi invited his friend, Rahul and he found the idea to be exciting. Rahul said:
"Rishi, my childhood friend, called me and said, ‘Papa (Raj Kapoor) is starting the shooting of Mera Naam Joker’s next part,’ which was about the Russian circus. He said, ‘The girls with the Russian circus are very pretty. They are small and young and wear short skirts.’ I found the idea very exciting. So, I went there with Chintu."
Going further in the interview, Rahul mentioned that day had changed his life for good only. He recalled going to the set and being in awe of Raj Kapoor directing a film set with 5,000 people. The director added that he was amazed by the way Raj Kapoor was managing the set, and there was no confusion going on as the latter paid attention to every minute detail. Rahul can be quoted as saying:
"Upon reaching the set, I saw Raj saab working. This one man was controlling a unit of 5,000 people, including Russian and Indian circus artists and crowds, whilst sitting in one spot. Even amidst this, he knew what he wanted, there was no confusion in his mind, and he paid attention to even the minute details."

Rahul Rawail mentioned that he spent the day looking at Raj Kpoor's way of working. He went to the set again the next day, and eventually, it became his routine to go there. Rahul said he returned home and told his mom about his wish to assist Raj Kapoor, and the former's father, who was also a director, was very happy.
For the unversed, Rahul Rawail started assisting Raj Kapoor, when he was 15 years old. He also wrote a book, Raj Kapoor The Master at Work, consisting of the details about witnessing the late actor-director, Raj Kapoor's expertise.

Talking about his friendship with Rishi Kapoor, Rahul said that they were friends since kindergarten, and there was not even a single day when they hadn't talked to one another. Rahul also remarked that he and Rishi Kapoor had a 60-year-long friendship, and even distance or fights couldn't stop them from being with one another. Rahul stated:
"We had been together since kindergarten and shared a 60-year-long friendship. We talked every single day, no matter where we were in the world. Even when we fought, we still talked to each other.”
