Ranbir Kapoor is one of the most handsome hunks in Bollywood. Before marrying Alia Bhatt, Ranbir had an image of a Casanova as he dated many actresses, including Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif. Once, his father, Rishi Kapoor decided to talk about his son's playboy image in the media and admitted that the latter was dating four girls at the same time. However, later, he changed his statement and clarified that he didn't mean that Ranbir was a playboy.
During an interview with Filmfare in 2013, Rishi Kapoor candidly talked about his son, Ranbir Kapoor’s dating life and rumours of the latter being in a relationship with more than one woman simultaneously. Talking about Ranbir's casanova image, Rishi said that his son was successful and that any girl would like to date him. The late actor said:
“It’s an image given by the media. He’s not that kind. Even if he is why not? He’s successful. Any girl would like to date him. Abhi nahi karega toh kab meri umar mein aakey karega?”

Further talking about Ranbir Kapoor’s love life, Rishi Kapoor said that in the age of finding a soulmate, his son was busy seeing everyone. He addressed the girls in Ranbir's life as A, B, C, and D and shared that none of the ladies knew that Ranbir was cheating on them. He added:
“This is the age to find a soul mate. (Laughs) He’s seeing everyone because I keep seeing A B C and D in the house. But I don’t think that A knows about B and C knows about D. The staff knows and I know. I’m still the boss of the house. The news reaches my ears.”
Later, in an interview with Anupama Chopra, Rishi Kapoor clarified his stance on his controversial ABCD comment. It so happened that the host threw light on Rishi's past comment on Ranbir's Casanova image and asked the latter if he got mad when his father said something like that in the media. But before Ranbir could say anything, Rishi intervened and said:

"I didn't mean to say that he is dating four girls at one time. A lot of women come to the house, they could be dress designers, stylists, hair dressers, assistants.. So, that's what I wanted to say in that mood, but it got misconstrued, and you got into saying that A doesn't know B, B doesn't know C... I wouldn't like that. He shouldn't be cheating on any girl, that's not the right way to do. You don't cheat on your girlfriends. So, that's something I wanted to say in that manner."

Despite being a strict father, Rishi Kapoor admitted that he never imposed his opinions on his son, Ranbir Kapoor’s creative decisions and respected the latter's career choices. In his book, Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, the late actor revealed that he and his son, Ranbir never became true friends while his wife, Neetu Kapoor, shared a close bond with their son. An excerpt from the book can be read as:
“The distance that exists between us is similar to the one between my father and me. Ranbir and I see each other through this space but can’t feel each other. At least, I can’t. There are times when I feel I’ve missed out on being a friend to my son. I was a strict father because I was brought up to believe that’s how a father should be. In one of his interviews, Ranbir said, ‘My father is not a friend. He is a father. I can’t backslap him and joke around with him.’ He is a friend to Neetu but not to me, and that’s something I deeply regret."
