Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh are one of the best examples of an ideal couple. There is no doubt that they represent pure love at its finest. After nine years of courtship, the duo got married on February 3, 2012. When Genelia was married, she was at the peak of her career and was only 25 years old. Riteish, on the other hand, was 34 years old. However, the actress took a ten-year-long career break from the industry post her wedding. Since the Deshmukhs were a political family, it was widely speculated that they had requested Genelia to stop working in the film industry. However, in Kareena Kapoor's chat show, What Woman Want, Riteish and Genelia disclosed the actual reason for the latter's long break in the industry.
In the chat show, when Genelia was asked about her career break, she mentioned that before marriage, she had worked way too much in different industries and even had a long-distance relationship with Riteish while they were dating. So after marriage, she wanted to prioritise things differently. The actress also revealed that the first thing people asked her was whether Riteish had said no to acting or if the family had any issue with her working. Speaking about the same, Riteish said how Genelia used to reply. He said:
"She said no, I’ve worked too much and I just want to take a break."

Riteish further added that there could be certain perceptions because of the political position his father held, but he thinks Genelia, the kids, and him to be a family. The actor also added that, of course, there is a responsibility for what the family does, but they make their own decisions, not others. Riteish further said that he believes that there is an equal degree of respect in his relationship and he will never tell Genelia what to do and that she respects his decisions as well. Elaborating one the same, he said:
"There could be a certain perception because of the political position that my father held, that you come from a certain family but for us, it’s me and Genelia and the kids. Extended family and of course there is a responsibility towards what the family does but our decisions are led by us. Not anyone else. And also in that, I think there is equal amount of respect that whatever Genelia wants to do, I will never ever tell her what to do and she respects my decisions also. In fact, right now she is back. She is doing 3-4 films."
Genelia said it was Riteish who encouraged her and told her to go out and do it. Riteish again shared that he felt Genelia stopped being herself, and she was missing being in front of the camera. He also shared that he wanted this to happen soon, but it got delayed because of the pandemic. The actor said:

Further in the interview, when Kareena asked them about the break they took after welcoming their kids, Riteish said that women are often told that they should take some time at home after the child, but he thinks it should be the lady's decision, whether she wants to get back to work or not. He stated:
"They always expect the lady to take some time home after the child...for the lady to decide when she wants to get back. One should not force, one should not say you need to stay home."
Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza's wedding is no less than a fairytale. However, the duo had two wedding ceremonies to showcase respect for each other's traditions. The first one was in Maharastrian style, which was held on February 3, 2012, at the Grand Hyatt hotel. The other one happened in Christian style, which was held at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Bandra. The couple also had a lavish reception party at the Grand Hyatt. For the unversed, the duo recently worked in the Marathi film, Ved under Riteish's direction, which turned out to be a great success for them.
