Hardik Pandya was named the captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI) in December 2023, and ever since then, he has received a lot of flak from the team's die-hard fans. This sudden move by the franchise led to an abrupt end to Rohit Sharma's glorious stint as the captain of MI, during which he led the side to five IPL titles. Moreover, MI’s series of losses in the ongoing IPL tournament has added to the woes of Hardik.
On April 1, 2024, Mumbai Indians played against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After getting defeated in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, it was time for MI to showcase their cricketing prowess on home turf. From the moment Hardik stepped onto the field, the spectators started booing him. Despite the former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar's intervention at the toss, when he urged the Wankhede crowd to give a round of applause for Hardik and 'behave' themselves, nothing changed.

While the MI franchise is yet to put out a statement regarding the continuous backlash that Hardik is facing, the former captain, on the other hand, tried to do his bit to get the situation in control but did not succeed much. A video from last night’s match has been going viral on the internet. In the video, Rohit Sharma, who was stationed at the boundary, was seen gesturing to the crowd to calm down a bit.
It seemed like the acclaimed cricketer had it enough and he requested the loyal fans of MI to stop mocking the new captain during the game. Hardik, who saw the former captain taking his side, was all smiles after this gesture by him. Navjot Singh Sidhu and Ambati Rayudu chipped in and lauded Rohit Sharma for taking a stand for Hardik Pandya.

Ambati Rayudu said, “This should be stopped, and fans shouldn’t cross the line. It is nice of Rohit to come forward and take a stand for Hardik Pandya.” Navjot Singh Sidhu, on the other hand, said, “Hardik and Rohit are Indian players, and the fans should understand this. Rohit’s gesture was needed as Hardik is not a criminal.” Even fans of Rohit Sharma took to X (formerly Twitter), and have been praising the gesture of the former captain of MI.
Mumbai Indians lost the game against Rajasthan Royals by six wickets.
