Rupali’s personal life has seen many highs and lows, and her marriage, too, came under the spotlight in 2024. Talking about her married life, Rupali is married to Ashwin Verma, whom she met during an ad shoot. Today, we will read on to know how the duo met and fell in love.
Rupali Ganguly met Ashwin K Verma during a commercial shoot for an advertisement. Speaking to Ranveer Allahbadia in his podcast, Rupali elaborated on her first meeting with Ashwin and revealed:
“I was studying hotel management at IHM in Dadar, which was a catering college. Tab mujhe ek ad film ki offer aayi. Wo New York Life company me the, where he was heading the Asian-Indian market. He was heading five markets there- the Korean market, the Chinese market, Vietnamese market, Pakistani market. So this guy was supposed to be the corporate vice president, he comes to shoot an ad in India.”
In the same interaction, Rupali stated that Ashwin was addicted to India and loved everything about the country. So he wanted an excuse to be in India, and when the ad was shot, he came to India. Rupali, at that point, wasn’t keen on acting and didn’t want to do it.

When Rupali arrived at the shoot dressed in the costume of a 65-year-old, it was Ashwin who passed on a comment, which was an indirect proposal for her. Recalling the same, she said:
“Suddenly, when I came out as a 65-year-old with white hair and everything, the first line Ashwin said was I wouldn’t mind getting old with someone like you. There was never ‘I Love You’. We directly got married. I said ye to line maar raha hai. Mai to tabhi… I was floored.”
Talking to Ranveer Allahabadia, Rupali shared that she and Ashwin have remained friends for a long time. She also stated that there was no formal proposal and revealed:
“So there was no I love you happening from either side. Matlab I love you to hua hi nahi yaar, matlab mereko propose bhi nahi kiya, mai to aese hi shaadi kar li. Maine bola shaadi kar lete hain. I had to wait for him…to maine 12 saal intezaar kiya is insaan ka aur mujhe inhi se shaadi karni thi. I couldn’t see anybody else as my husband.”
Ashwin had been married twice before marrying Rupali Ganguly. Details about his first marriage remain private, and no information is available. In 1997, Ashwin married Sapna, a former Miss Karnataka. The couple lived happily in New Jersey with their daughters before Rupali entered their lives.
The controversy around Rupali Ganguly and Ashwin Verma’s marriage began when a 2020 post of Ashwin’s daughter, Esha Verma, resurfaced on social media. In the long post, Esha took a dig at Rupali's marriage and revealed that the actress separated him from his family.
In an interview with Free Press Journal, Esha revealed that she was just 2 years old when her dad, Ashwin’s extramarital affair with Rupali began. In the same interaction, Esha also stated that when she was 13, Ashwin left their home. Esha further mentioned that Rupali was good friends with Ashwin and would visit the family in New Jersey and would stay in her parents’ bedroom.
After Esha Verma’s shocking allegations, Rupali Ganguly reacted by reportedly filing an Rs. 50 crore defamation case against Esha Verma. Soon after the lawsuit, Esha Verma made her profile private and also deleted all the posts regarding the actress.
Ashwin left his high-paying job in the US and came to India so that Rupali could make her comeback in the television industry. With the success of Anupamaa, Rupali became the highest-paid actress on TV.
