Veteran screenwriter, Salim Khan fell in love with Sushila Charak, later known as Salma Khan, and later, the duo tied the knot in 1964. Together, they have three sons, Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, and Sohail Khan, and two daughters, Arpita Khan and Alvira Agnihotri. As Salim and Salma had an inter-faith marriage, the latter's father was against it. Salim's father-in-law was so angry with their union that he didn't even visit them for ten years.
In an interview with his son, Arbaaz Khan, on the talk show, The Invincibles, Salim Khan shared some details about his inter-faith marriage with his first wife, Salma Khan. During the heartfelt conversation, Salim recalled the early days of his courtship with Salma and mentioned that he expressed his desire to meet her parents as he felt that meeting secretly was inappropriate. He shared:

"Before our courtship, I told Salma I want to meet your parents as hiding and meeting is a wrong thing. So when I went to her house, I felt all the Maharashtrians from India were there (chuckles). I was very nervous about seeing so many people."

Salim Khan then reflected on his first meeting with his father-in-law and shared that the latter was initially concerned about their religious differences. However, Salim reassured him that religion would never be a problem between him and Salma. He added:
"My father-in-law told me that I was a nice guy but religion was the problem. I was 24 at that time. I then told him, ‘Doctor sahib, meri aur aapki beti ke 1760 problems ho sakte hai, but religion will never be one of them'."
Later, Salim and Salma registered their marriage and embarked on their forever journey. While the duo was happy in their paradise, Salma's father did not accept their marriage. Moreover, he didn't even visit them for ten years until their son, Sohail was born. Recalling the same, Salim said:
"He came for the first time after Sohail was born. He just saw us and went away.”

However, Salim Khan's love life took a major turn when he fell in love with renowned actress and dancer, Helen. The screenwriter got married for the second time in 1981. During the same conversation, Salim Khan revealed that Salma was the first member of their family to accept Helen, and soon, everyone started living harmoniously. He also mentioned that this kind of relationship is only depicted in films and added that it’s very difficult to give equal importance to both sides in real life.
