Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan’s hit film, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam has earned a special place in the hearts of millions of cinephiles. The movie, encompassing a timeless tale of love, not only is an epitome of exemplary cinematography of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but also of the leads and then-lovers, Aishwarya and Salman’s unbeatable chemistry. For the unversed, it was shortly after the release of this film that the two of them broke up, and the rest is history.
In one of his old interviews on Star Plus’s show, Star Talk, Sanjay Leela Bhansali had recalled the glory his iconic film, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam received, post being selected to be premiered at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival. The filmmaker credited a lady called Dorothy, who was a part of the selecting team for the event, who visited India, saw the film and considered it the perfect choice to be showcased at the film festival. He narrated:

“It was wonderful that it was selected in Berlin, it is now gone to every festival. There were two people responsible for it. One was Dorothy who came here from Berlin to select a film and a taxi driver said, ‘Memsahab aap ye picture dekho humare saath.’ He went with her, he sat with her, explained the film to her and she fell in love with the film.”

Moving forth in the conversation, Sanjay Leela Bhansali credited another important lady behind the massive success of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and it was none other than Jaya Bachchan. Sanjay mentioned that at first, he was apprehensive that Jaya Bachchan might have hated the film. However, when he later got call from the legendary actress, he realised that it was all due to the veteran actress’ efforts that his film was premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. In his words:
“And there was Jaya Bachchan, who recommended the film very strongly to Berlin. She came and saw the film and the day she saw the film, she came out, smiled at me and left. I thought she hated the film, it was before the release of the film. And then she called me one day and said, ‘You thought I hated the film but my way of saying that I like the film was to recommend it to Berlin and see to it that it goes over there.”
Well, if old reports are to be trusted, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai’s irresistible chemistry in real life was at its peak when they came together for their film, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. In one of his old interviews, Salman had shared his unsatisfaction over the kind of depressive ending Sanjay Leela Bhansali gave to this film, which is surmounted with a lot of tragedy. On the contrary, the actor mentioned that if he were to direct the film, he would make sure that the female protagonist, 'Nandini' left her husband, 'Balraj' and went towards the guy he loved. He shared:
"I did not agree with the ending in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Sanjay Bhansali told me that he wanted a depressive high. But frankly, I feel that love is above all traditions. But if you are making a traditional film, then (cuss word) love. Nandini (Aishwarya) should have left her husband and gone with the guy she loved (Salman). Her husband (Ajay Devgan) was like god to her for what he did. If I had made Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, I would have let her go with the guy she loved."

Back in the days, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was keen on casting Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan together for his film, Bajirao Mastani. The filmmaker had even planned to give away the titular roles of the film. However, that plan never materialised, and rumours were rife that the former Miss World stepped out of the film over Salman Khan. However, in another clarificatory interview, the diva spilled beans on the real reason behind the decision and mentioned:
“He (Sanjay) did see us working as the cast that he saw was ideal for the film. But circumstantially, I could not work with the kind of team he was looking at. Well, I was game to play Mastani but not with the Bajirao he had in mind. So, this was evident probably nationally. The media made it out to be that Aishwarya walks out of Bajirao Mastani. We hadn’t communicated then because I was in hospital with my leg laid up."
