The late legendary filmmaker and screenwriter Satyajit Ray is often regarded as the greatest director in the history of Indian cinema. One of his most appreciated cinematic wonders was his 1955 release, Pather Pnachali. The film was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. The image of 'Durga' and 'Apu' running parallel to a train is forever etched into the minds of cinema lovers, and now, unfortunate news has come that has left us all shattered.
Uma Dasgupta mesmerised everyone with her acting in the 1955 film, Pather Pachali passed away at the age of 84. She succumbed to cancer. She was reportedly suffering from cancer for the past few years. The report of her death was confirmed by her relative, ace actor and politician, Chiranjeet Chakraborty, via Anandabazar Patrika.
The news of Uma Dasgupta's passing broke on the early hours of Monday, November 18, 2024, has left us all in shock. She was reported to have died around 8 AM. Chiranjeet informed Anandabazar Patrika that during the morning, he met Uma's daughter and learnt of her sudden demise. He said:
“Uma di's daughter informed me that she is no more. She was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago.”
After the diagnosis, Uma underwent a series of medical treatments. She initially responded well to the treatment, but unfortunately, the cancer returned. She was then admitted to a local hospital in Kolkata for further treatment. It was there that she passed away.
Uma Dasgupta's love for theatre was ingrained in her from a young age. The headmaster of her school, a friend of director, Satyajit Ray, played a pivotal role in her journey. It was through him that she was cast in Pather Panchali. Despite her father's initial opposition to her acting career, she went on to make a mark in the film industry, albeit in a few more films after Pather Panchali.
