Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar are one such evergreen couple whose love transcends all things beautiful. The duo, who have stuck together through thick and thin have often revealed fond anecdotes about their golden days, which simply sheds inspirational goals for everyone. And yet again, Shabana Azmi recollected a special anecdote about her husband, Javed Akhtar, when the screenwriter supported her during a strong cause that she supported.

Shabana Azmi recalls lending her support to slum dwellers being displaced

In a recent interaction with Mira Nair at the New York Indian Film Festival, Shabana Azmi talked about a time when she was drawn towards the deep suffering of slum dwellers whose homes got demolished by the government. She prided being the daughter of eminent poet and communist, Kaifi Azmi, and added that she wanted to support for the just cause. In her words:

“Instinctively, I decided that I would like to go as well. I joined the strike, and then, of course, we were in the limelight. My mother was really, really scared. My father was in Patna at that time. My mother sent a message to him, saying, your daughter is doing this, please put some sense into her head’. And I got a telegram from my father, saying, ‘Best of luck, comrade’. My mother would come, all white in the face, but then she would say, ‘Inqilab zindabad’.”

Moving on with the recollection, Shabana Azmi then expressed how her husband, Javed Akhtar showed support to her in his unique style. Moreover, she reminisced a hilarious moment when Javed excused himself and went out from the protesting place to have food. She mentioned:

“I was supported by Javed. Javed and Tanvi, my sister-in-law, would come to the hunger strike and sit with us, and then say, ‘Achcha Gandhi ji, aap strike kariye, hum tandoori chicken kha ke aate hain. But they were very supportive.”

For the unversed, before getting married to Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar was married to Honey Irani, and the duo is parents to their children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. However, after they separated, Farhan and Zoya gradually warmed upto Shabana. In an earlier interaction with Zoom, Shabana credited Javed’s ex-wife, Honey Irani aiding her children to bond with the actress, and making them believe that she wasn’t a wicked step-mother in their lives.

Shabana revealed that she and Farhan wanted to kill each other once

Previously, during an interview with Filmfare, Shabana Azmi recalled her frequent fights with Javed Akhtar right after their marriage. She mentioned that their fights used to escalate so much that they even wished to kill each other. She expressed:

“But if you have a happy relationship, as I have with Javed (Akhtar), then it is one of the most nurturing relationships that can exist. Javed and I have huge fights and want to kill each other but at the end of the day, respecting the other person is important. Javed is fond of saying that Shabana is my best friend. And this friendship is so strong that even marriage could not ruin it.”
