Shah Rukh Khan is the undoubted superstar of Indian cinema, and there can be no second thoughts about it. Over so many years of his terrific filmography, the actor hasn’t for once failed to win the hearts of millions of his fans, who regard him as their ultimate inspiration. Not just with his films, but SRK also woos everyone with his real-life personality and unbeatable charisma, which sets him apart from the league.
A true performer is a person who not only counts their successes, but also keeps a track of their failures. The same fact is true for Shah Rukh Khan, who has always taken away key learnings from his downfalls, and hasn’t sulked over it. Recently, the actor sat down for an interview with Richard Quest, wherein he talked about the five years of his professional career (from 2018 to 2023), when he was simply missing from action after his films flunked at the box-office. Revealing his key takeaways from that phase of his life, Shah Rukh said:
“I had massive flops, and they did very, very badly. I was licking my wounds. But you know what I did? I learnt to make the best pizza in the world. I stopped listening to stories, I stopped wanting to tell stories, I made myself a little kitchen, and I started learning how to make pizzas. I learnt perseverance. Because to make the perfect round pizza, you have to first make a million square ones".

Moving further in the same conversation, Shah Rukh Khan then narrated how after so many of his films flunking at the box-office, he got inspired to make a comeback, bigger and better. He credited his family members for making him realise, yet again, that he was born to be an actor, who makes brilliant films for his fans. SRK revealed that it was then when he realised that all this while, he was doing the futile job of looking for perfection, whereas all what he had to do was to remain his unique self. In his words:
“I was glad that my family didn’t tell me, ‘Listen, your pizzas are better than your films, stop making films.’ I’m glad that they turned around and said, ‘As good as your pizzas are, your films are better’. They were very encouraging, especially my children and my team. I’d become indulgent. I’d started becoming too innovative. I was looking for perfection, and I started failing. I needed to be excellent, I needed to be unique, but I needed to look at what the audience wanted."
In the concluding segment of the interview, Shah Rukh Khan admitted that earlier he didn’t understand what his fans demanded to see of him, and he ended up mistaking it for something other. However, after trying his hands over a range of versatile roles, he has realised that his fans want to see him in a happy and hopeful avatar, and he will do as they say.

Previously, in one of his interactions with a leading daily, Shah Rukh Khan talked about why he decided to take a sabbatical in his career. The actor mentioned that he started to believe that his audience didn’t like his movies any more, and began doubting his own abilities. In his words:
“It's new because I have been working for 33 years and took such a big gap. Normally, you get a little nervous and you feel, 'I hope I've got the film right.' Before that, there were some of my films that didn't do well, and so I thought I'm not making good films. But I think more than my films, there was love for Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki from the people."
