Shah Rukh Khan Recalls Leaving Films After 'Zero' Failed, 'I Didn't Feel Like Acting Anymore'

Shah Rukh Khan is one of the biggest stars India has ever witnessed. Despite working in just Hindi films, he has a massive fan following across India and abroad. He came as an outsider and began his journey from TV before venturing into films. Despite a rough start, Shah Rukh went on to star in several popular films, from DDLJ and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Devdas and Veer-Zaara. He has been one of the most successful stars since the '90s and hasn't looked back. In a new interview, SRK opened up about a phase in his career when he didn't feel like acting and backed out of projects.

Shah Rukh Khan reveals he didn't feel like acting after the release of his film, Zero in 2018

Recently, Shah Rukh Khan sat down for an interview with Variety and discussed the struggles in his journey. He particularly recalled when his films weren't doing well, and one of his most ambitious films, Zero, failed at the box office. Shah Rukh worked hard for the film, including a song with Salman Khan and actively promoted it yet it failed to perform at the box office. The Pathaan actor said he didn't feel like acting anymore for a while after its release.

In the interview, Shah Rukh shared that it was a difficult phase for him. He recalled that he was supposed to begin shooting for another film a month after Zero's release but backed out. As per the speculations at that time, he possibly referred to the film, Saare Jahan Se Achha. It was supposed to be a biopic of Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian man to enter space. Shah Rukh was quoted as saying:

"I called the producer and I said to him that I don't want to work for a year. He said, 'It's not possible. You don't sit without working for even a minute. So if you don't like the film, say no, don't say you're not working for a year'. And a year and a half later, he did call and he said, 'I was really surprised you actually are not working.' So I just didn't want to work. I just didn't want to act. I didn't feel like acting. Because for me, acting is genuinely very, very organic."

Shah Rukh admitted it was unprofessional for him to back out from a film at the last moment

Despite being a big star, Shah Rukh is admired by industry colleagues and fans for his humble nature in real life. He graciously admitted that he was unprofessional when he backed out a month before beginning the shoot of a new film. He added that it wasn't entirely due to Zero's failure, but he didn't feel like getting up and shooting for it. In his words:

"I've always maintained that the day I don't feel like getting up in the morning and conquering the shoot, I don't want to work. It wasn't the failure of the films, to be honest. I was doing a film in January, and Zero release was in December. Very unprofessional of me. I just woke up and I said, 'I don't want to go and shoot this film."
