When we think of Shahid Kapoor, the picture that automatically comes to our minds is his charming laugh and jolly on-screen persona. The actor isn’t particularly known to spill the beans about his personal life, but when he does, he makes sure to keep it real. Back in the day, Shahid’s breakup with Kareena Kapoor Khan was the talk of the town, but that’s all history now. Both of them have now moved on and Shahid is happily married to his wife, Mira Kapoor. Recently, Shahid got super candid in an interaction, he opened up about a tough phase in his life when he was going through a bad breakup, highlighting the pressure of always ‘being the man’.
Shahid Kapoor recently sat for a hearty chat with the journalist, Faye D’Souza, on his YouTube channel. At one point, the Kabir Singh star was asked if he had ever wept alone because of his career. Shahid candidly recalled that a past heartbreak had made him cry terribly in between shoots. The actor recalled:
“That only happened to me when I went through heartbreak. And, sometimes it happens when you are making movies. So, I have had that. It was really bad. My makeup guy was like, ‘I just finished your makeup! Can you just not?'”
Shahid’s makeup guy couldn’t handle it and was irritated as his tears disturbed the freshly done makeup. Recalling the incident, Shahid laughed while re-enacting his emotional state, saying in a weeping tone, ‘I can’t help it, I think I am destroying myself’.
Further in the interview, Shahid came clean about the societal burden of being a man, especially in India. The actor stated that Indian men are conditioned to ‘be the man’ and in the process, bear loads of emotional baggage. Describing how it often takes a toll on a man with overwhelming emotions, Shahid shared:
“Indian men especially, have been kind of told from a very young age that you have to be the provider, that you have to protect and be the man of the family… Sometimes, it can put a lot of pressure on you. Sometimes, you just want to relax and be like, ‘I don’t have to keep worrying about everything and everybody… I can just maybe be vulnerable and let somebody else protect me’.”
Shahid highlighted the fact that vulnerability is never a weakness, and tapping into it is part of his job as an actor. He has learned that being open and raw is far more human and powerful than trying to act tough all the time. He explained:

“I have to be able to get to that place which is vulnerable and expressive. When you are an actor, you also understand that vulnerability is extremely attractive. Aggression cannot attract people the way vulnerability does. It’s only human to be vulnerable, so as a man, you should be okay with it.”
On his work front, Shahid is gearing up for his upcoming film, Deva, set to hit the theatres on February 14, 2025. He is also going to work on a project with Vishal Bhardwaj with Triptii Dimri.
Well, seeing Shahid getting real on a man’s vulnerability surely makes him more relatable. What do you think?
