The cultural and spiritual significance of donating hair

Donating hair, which is called mundan in Hinduism, has a deep-rooted spiritual significance in different cultures. The hair-cutting ritual has different meanings in several cultures and signifies transformation, humility, or detachment. As per Ayodhya's mythology expert, Dr Narendra Bahadur Singh's statement to the Indian Express, hair is often linked to vanity and one's attachment to herself/himself. Thus, cutting it off can be symbolised as the powerful yet peaceful act of letting go.

In Hinduism, mundan is done on the infants, and it solely signifies that the little one is being free from his past karma and entering into a new life with new purpose. In Hinduism, the mundan is also done after the demise of any near and dear one, and it signifies detachment from worldly ties, which helps the individual to come to terms with life's cyclical nature. In Buddhism, it means one's dedication to the monastic path. As per the mythology expert, in American tribes, shaving hair mainly signifies one's journey towards renewed purpose and strength, as by changing appearance, the individual tries to embrace the change, and it helps them to find closure. Well, this act is considered emotionally peaceful to those, who opt for the same.
