Bollywood actor, Shekhar Suman, who was most recently seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has been garnering much limelight. The 61-year-old debuted in the Indian film industry in 1984 and has worked on a handful of projects since then. Recently, Shekhar took a trip down memory lane and recalled an incident while he was shooting his debut film.
Shekhar Suman starred alongside Bollywood biggies, Shashi Kapoor, Rekha and Amjad Khan in the 1984 film, Utsav. The actor shared an incident involving himself, Anuradha Patel, Shashi Kapoor and his son, Kunal Kapoor. He recalled during an interaction on the Honestly Saying Podcast that their car had hit one man, while they were driving to Bangalore to catch a flight. Sharing more details about the incident, Shekhar said:

“Shashi Kapoor and Anuradha Patel, who played my wife, and me and his son Kunal Kapoor, were returning from Bangalore to catch a flight. We were sitting in the car, an Ambassador, and we hit a man on the road. He went flying, and then the villagers came, and they started hitting all of us.”

Shekhar Suman further added that the angry villagers had caught Shashi Kapoor by the collar and even thrashed the actor’s son, Kunal. He said that the villagers even threatened to behead Mr Rajesh. Meanwhile, the person who was hit by their car sat under a tree and sipped tea. Shekhar Suman tagged this incident as ‘scary’ and said:
“They broke the windshield; they caught Shashi Kapoor by the collar, and they started beating up Kunal Kapoor. There was this actor who’s no more, Mr. Rajesh, they caught hold of his hair and said, ‘We’re going to behead you.’ The man who was actually hit was sitting under a tree, sipping tea and smiling. I don’t know what he was muttering in his native language, but it was so scary.”
Previously, during his conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Shekhar Suman reminisced about the time when he was shooting Utsav with the then-reigning queen of Bollywood, Rekha. He said that he will forever remain grateful to the legendary actress as she had said yes to working with a newcomer when she could have easily said no. Shekhar further said he is thankful to Shashi Kapoor and Girish Karnad for giving him his big break in the industry.

Furthermore, Shekhar heaped praise on Rekha and mentioned that he had never seen an actress as professional as her. He recalled that there was a massive income tax raid at Rekha’s home on the first day of the shoot. Shekhar continued by saying that any actor would have packed their bags and would have gone away, but she stayed focused on her job. In his words:

“Itni professional actress uske baad mujhe zindagi mein bohot kam aise log mile jo itna professional apne kaam mein bilkul maahir. I remember that she had a massive income tax raid on the first day of the shoot. Any other actor would have packed their bags and gone away. She said, ‘Let them do their job, I’ll stay back and do mine.’”
