Shilpa Shetty is one of the most talented actresses of her generation. She is credited to have contributed to the Hindi film industry with some memorable hit films and some foot-tapping dance numbers, which are praised even today. Currently, the diva is beaming with excitement for her next film, Sukhee, whose trailer has already promised some wholesome entertainment. Amidst it all, Shilpa recalls one of the most stressful times in her career so far.
In a recent interview with Zoom Entertainment, Shilpa Shetty reminisced the phase of her career when she was rendered to do only item numbers, since no film of hers was properly working out. She recalled one such moment when her most popular film, Dhadkan got shelved midway and there were reports that the film was not going to be made. Shilpa mentioned that since she didn’t have any other option at that time, and therefore she chose to do the item song, Main Aayi Hoon UP Bihar Lootne from the other film, Shool. In her words:

“I went through a personal and a professional low at a time and I remember I used that time to learn make-up, I used that time to better and improve myself, and I did whatever came. I remember there was a time when Dhadkan was stalled and was not going to happen, and I got offered ‘UP Bihar…’ I didn’t know when it was going to be made because the director was working on another project, he didn’t say that he wasn’t making it, but I knew it would take a couple of years. So, I said now what.”

Shilpa Shetty then mentioned how her decision to do an item song seemingly upset Dhadkan’s filmmaker, Dharmesh Darshan. The actress highlighted how such a power-packed item song did not match with the kind of docile character that she was to play in Dhadkan. She mentioned:
“He was very upset when I decided to take up ‘UP Bihar…’ and thank God I did, because it brought me back in the news. But my director Dharmesh ji, I remember was very upset because Anjali, the character (in Dhadkan) was someone who was supposed to be very classy and cannot be a nautch girl. With due respect to him, I felt it was a decision I should take in my life. And in life, if people follow their convictions and instincts, then they’ll be able to achieve a lot, because I feel we underestimate the power of our instincts.”
In the concluding segment of the interview, Shilpa credited her choices of doing some chartbusting item songs, since they later on became a single marker of identity for her. She hails the power of these item songs, which helped her to carve a niche, and she became unanimously recognised more as an item girl than as an actress, which, at the end kept her in the headlines. She mentioned:
“For two years I was known as an item girl, but it kept me working because I was doing so many shows. Funnily enough, my films work or don’t, that I don’t know. But my songs have always worked. All my songs were huge hits. Today, I am where I am because of those songs, I cannot undermine or be ungrateful for the music and the power of that music in my life. I was happy that I was at least able to carve a niche in the aspect or the area of glamour, which is great, it is a great compliment.”
