Smriti Irani is a powerhouse of talent, and she has significantly proved the same throughout in her career. She began her journey as a model and was one of the final participants for Miss India 1998. Thereafter, she engaged into a few odd jobs, from selling cosmetics on streets to serving as a cleaner at Mc Donalds. However, luck favoured her soon enough and through a chance of events, she bagged the iconic role of 'Tulsi' in Ekta Kapoor’s hit show, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Since the year 2004, Smriti has taken an active participation in politics, and fast forward to now, she is mightily reigning in the Ministry of Minority Affairs as well as Ministry of Women and Child Development.
In an interaction with Brut, Smriti Irani talked about her career as an actress and highlighted the certain conditions she levied on herself, when it came to the kind of work she wished to do. Talking about the same, the actor-turned-politician mentioned how she missed out on certain opportunities because of her avarice for pan masala ads. Moreover, Smriti revealed that she wasn’t ever ready to perform publicly in weddings. In her words:
“When I left I was the highest paid actor in Indian television. But I also had a few conditions. I missed on many opportunities. I missed opportunities where I would not do a pan masala ad. I was very clear that this is not how I perceived myself to be. I would not go to weddings. There was a lot of money in that, but I had a different view of myself as a professional.”

Moving forth in the conversation, Smriti revealed that the time when she decided to step down from acting was actually the peak of her professional time. She stated her wish to always be identified as a dignified actress, and so she didn’t want to associate herself with whimsy female roles in movies. She further remarked how she refused to audition for a role in the film, Dil Chahta Hai, since she didn’t find herself fitting the bill for the role of a ‘heroine running around trees’. She said:
“I had familial responsibilities. I didn’t want it to become an embarrassment for my family members so I wanted to lead my life as an actor with dignity. I made choices where even in the first 3 months of KSBKBT I was offered main leads in movies but I had decided I’ll have a baby and I knew if I’m wanting to have a baby, I can’t be some heroine running around trees. One of those movies was Dil Chahta Hai which I said no to audition and they were like ‘are you mad, this is DCH. It was not Preity Zinta’s role for sure but it was one of the other ladies who was there, one of the main leads.”
Previously, in an interaction with Curly Tales, Smriti Irani talked about the time when she used to work as a cleaner in one of the oldest retail fast food chains, Mc Donalds. Talking about the wages she used to earn from that job, the former actress revealed it was around Rs. 1800 per month. Interestingly, she further added that this amount was almost equivalent to the per day salary she used to get from her debut show in television.
