Smriti Irani On Getting Rs. 1800 Per Day, Her Make-Up Man Said, 'Tulsi Bhabhi Auto Mein Aa Rahi Hai'

In a recent interview, Smriti Irani recalled how her make-up man was embarrassed to see her travel by auto and urged her to buy a car.

Smriti Irani On Getting Rs. 1800 Per Day, Her Make-Up Man Said, 'Tulsi Bhabhi Auto Mein Aa Rahi Hai'

Smriti Irani is still popular as 'Tulsi Virani' from the popular daily soap, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. The actress, who started her career quite early, made her acting debut with the TV series, Aatish and Hum Hain Kal Aaj Aur Kal. However, it was her character, Tulsi Irani, which made her an overnight star.

Smriti Irani recalled getting an income of Rs. 1800 per day

In an interview with Neelesh Mishra for the show, The Slow Interview, Smriti Irani talked about various aspects of her professional journey. The former actress and current Union Cabinet Minister recalled her early days in television and how her daily income was Rs. 1800. She also revealed that her make-up man was embarrassed to see her as she used to travel in autos. Elaborating on the same, Smriti stated:

“You don't even look like a star, you look more like a technician with that kind of lifestyle. I used to get Rs. 1800, per day. When Zubin and I got married we barely had Rs. 30,000. I remember my makeup man was embarrassed and he used to say, 'gaadi toh lelo mujhe sharam aati hai mai gaadi pe aata hu aur Tulsi bhabhi auto mein aa rahi hai.”

When Smriti Irani started having tea with the technicians

In the same interview, Smriti also revealed that she used to get very upset seeing how the technicians and crew members were not allowed to have food on the set as producer, Shobha Kapoor feared that the furniture would be spoiled. Once the actress noticed that one of the sound guys did not take a break after working for 12-15 hours as he was not allowed to do so.

It was Smriti, who made Shobha Kapoor change her decision as she herself went out with the technicians and had her tea outside the set. Only after Shobha noticed the same, she allowed everyone to drink tea on the set. Talking about the same, Smriti shared:

“So then I had a setting with the spot guy, I used to ask for 60 teas to keep ready and I would go out with the technicians so that they all can have their tea too. I used to also travel the same way as the technicians so I knew what they went through.”
