Sridevi was one of the most talented divas of her generation, and as a result, she was rightfully hailed as the only female superstar of the her time in Bollywood, it simultaneously also brought about a decline in the career of her equal contemporary, Hema Malini, who by 1983 lost her position as the leading diva of Bollywood. Interestingly, while many would’ve expected that it ended up creating a cold war between the two massively successful stars, on the contrary, they became the best of friends.
Taking to the discussion portal, Reddit, a user dropped a special throwback clip of the brilliant actress, late Sridevi, who was being interviewed by Tollywood’s hit star, Prakash Raj. In the clip, which was in Tamil, Sridevi could be seen imitating her bestie, Hema Malini. Well, Sridevi elucidated how Hema used to complain to her about getting bad food at the functions, which was why she would instead have her food back home and then join the event. At the end of her mimic, Sridevi praised Hema and mentioned:
“She’s a great lady.”

Back in 2013, Hema Malini and Sridevi had attended a memorial event for the late filmmaker, Yash Chopra, that was hosted by his family members. Being previous heroines of the Yash Raj Films, both Hema and Sridevi were invited. But what caught everyone’s attention was the fact that the duo seemed to keep a distance from one another. While they didn’t misbehave with one another, but they seemingly ignored one another and were busy with other of their friends. An insider from the event back then narrated the real story and mentioned:
“Sri and Hema were standing right next to each other on two occasions but did not exchange a word. Also, towards the end of the event, they ensured that they did not stand together in a picture. To avoid further awkwardness, Pamela Chopra took her place between the two and the trio then proceeded for a snap. Sri and Hema are very cordial with each other. This time, we are not sure about what happened."
After Sridevi’s sudden demise in 2018, Hema Malini, in an interview with Mid-Day, had spoken up about the kind of friendship and bonding she shared with the late actress. Hema mentioned that apart from being actors, it was their commonality as mothers which brought them closer. She, then went on to remember a special anecdote about their friendship and revealed how it was Sridevi’s husband, Boney who launched her daughter, Esha into films. Moreover, she highlighted how Sridevi, who was pregnant with her secondborn, Khushi by then, used to drop by the shooting location of Esha Deol and keep a tab on her, just to ease her nervous mommy, Hema.

In the same interaction, Hema Malini heaped praises on Sridevi and highlighted how the latter was born to be an actress. She added how Sridevi’s mother, Rajeshwari Ayangar brought her up in a way, well-suited for the camera. In her words:
“Sridevi was born for the movies. I can't imagine her being in any other profession. Her mother had moulded her like that. I remember working with her for the first time in Sunehra Sansar. She was all of 13 years old, but you could see the spark in her. By the time we collaborated on our second film together, Justice Chaudhury, Sridevi was already one of the rising stars of Bollywood. But I could see that she was the same girl I had met many years ago – one who was completely dedicated to her work. It was her sincerity that saw her coming from Tamil and Telugu films, and making a mark in Bollywood.”
