Sukhwinder Singh is one of the greatest singers in the history of the Indian music industry. It was back in 2009 when Sukhwinder's voice echoed at the 81st Academy Awards. It was the song, Jai Ho, from the film, Slumdog Millionaire that won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture. Not only this, Sukhwinder was also bestowed with the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song, Bismil, from Vishal Bhardwaj's Haider at the 62nd National Film Awards.

Sukhwinder Singh has been captivating audiences with his versatile voice for decades now. From soulful renditions to powerful tracks and Sufi songs, Sukhwinder has engraved his status as one of the most successful singers ever in India. Most of his tracks are hits and hold a special place in our hearts, but a few tracks are simply timeless. It includes the likes of Dard-e-disco, Jai Ho, Chak de India!, Ramta Jogi, Beedi, Layi Vi Na Gayi, Kar Har Maidaan Fateh, Dil Haara, Dhan Te Nan, Bismil, Chaiyya Chaiyya, and Fashion Ka Jalwa.

Sukhwinder Singh was born on July 18, 1971, into Punjab’s Sharika Pind. Right from an early age, he was deeply inclined towards music and singing. At the mere age of eight, Sukhwinder started singing at school competitions and local events. The youngster grabbed everyone's attention when he sang the late legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar's iconic song, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, from the film, Abhinetri. According to several media reports, Sukhwinder lost his parents when he was just nine. However, not much information about Sukhwinder's family is available in the public domain.

According to a report in ABP News, Sukhwinder Singh joined hands with popular Punjabi singer, Malkit Singh for a song at the mere age of 13. Malkit and Sukhwinder composed the iconic song, Tutak Tutak Tutiya. The song became a hit, and Sukhwinder's voice started getting a lot of attention from Bollywood producers and filmmakers. Finally, it was in 1987 when he made his debut in Hindi cinema as a singer with the film, Soorma Bhopali, in which he sang the song, Tambakoo Nahin Hai.

The iconic singer, Sukhwinder Singh made his Telugu debut in 1997 as a singer with the movie, Rakshakudu, in which he collaborated with AR Rahman and sang the song, Lucky Lucky. In the same year, he introduced himself to the Tamil film industry after he sang the song, Lucky Lucky, in the film, Ratchagan. In the following years, Sukhwinder made his debut as a singer in the Kannada film industry with the song, Surya Sutthangilla, from the film, Sneha.

Sukhwinder Singh also worked in the Marathi industry for many years, and it all started back in 2009 with the song, O Raje from the film, Me Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy. Not only this, but Sukhwinder has also sung two songs in Urdu language, Kitni Baar (Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay) and Tu Hi Tu (Mehrunisa V Lub U). Sukhwinder has been singing at the top level for more than three decades, and his versatility is one of the many reasons behind his stellar career as a singer in India.

When AR Rahman apologised to Sukhwinder Singh after their song, Jai Ho won the Oscar

Sukhwinder Singh and AR Rahman share a wonderful bond with each other as they've worked on a series of iconic songs over the years. The duo's song, Jai Ho, from the film, Slumdog Billionaire is their best work to date, as they won the Academy Award for the same. However, not everyone is aware of the fact that Sukhwinder Singh wasn't with the cast and crew of the film, Slumdog Millionaire, when Jai Ho was bestowed with an Oscar. However, when the song's composer, AR Rahman lifted the Oscar, he forgot to mention Sukhwinder Singh, whose voice is the prime reason behind Jai Ho's unprecendeted success. Later on, AR Rahman apologised to Sukhwinder for not mentioning him during his award acceptance speech.

Apart from Sukhwinder Singh's illustrious career as a singer, he often breaks headlines for his personal life. For the uninitiated, back in 2018, reports were rife that Sukhwinder was in a rumoured relationship with popular singer, Anup Jalota's girlfriend, Jasleen Matharu. Sukhwinder and Jasleen reportedly fell in love while working on the song, Naachunga Saari Raat. However, in an old interview, Sukhwinder denied his dating rumours with Jasleen and revealed that they were nothing more than just 'close friends.'

Once Jasleen Matharu's chapter was closed, Sukhwinder Singh started getting many questions about his wedding. After being single even in his early '50s, Sukhwinder stunned everyone when in April 2024, he shared that he no longer craves for a partner. He said, “Kami toh tab feel hogi na jab hai hi nahi!” The iconic singer opened up about his marriage and hinted at a low-key wedding ceremony. He said:

"Rahi baat shaadi ki, zaroori nahi hai ki jinke bade jashn nahi hote, voh shaadi nahi karte! Karte hain na? Reveal nahi kar sakta. There are some relationships which are sensitive, one doesn’t feel the need to put it under the limelight."

As soon as Sukhwinder Singh's statement made its way out in the media, people started requesting the singer to disclose his partner's identity. However, he remained calm and didn't share anything about his life partner in the media. Despite Sukhwinder not revealing anything about his partner, people congratulated him for finally having a partner, as the singer had been craving a partner for a long time.
