Sulochana Latkar, known by her screen name ‘Sulochana’, was one of the most recognised and celebrated actresses in both Marathi and Hindi cinema. The iconic actress was born on July 30, 1928, and worked in Indian cinema for six decades. During her illustrious acting career, she played a series of roles but was renowned for playing ‘mother’ on the big screen. Some of her notable films are the likes of Ab Dilli Dur Nahin, Sujata, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Dil Deke Dekho, Aasha, Majboor, Nai Roshni, Aayi Milan Ki Bela, Gora Aur Kala, Devar, and Bandini, among others.
Sulochana Latkar passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2023. For the unversed, the veteran actress was hospitalised and underwent treatment. However, it was Sulochana's daughter, Kanchan, who shared in a conversation with ABP that her mother was in a critical condition due to age-related ailments, including shortness of breath. The doting daughter also added that her mother was hospitalised and placed on a ventilator with a continuous oxygen supply as her health deteriorated.

Unfortunately, the veteran actress showed no signs of recovery and passed away at the age of 94. The film industry mourns the loss of a talented actress whose contributions impacted Marathi and Hindi cinema. As soon as the news of Sulochana’s demise made headlines, the entire film industry got utterly numbed with pain. While everyone is aware of Sulochana’s illustrious acting career, not everyone knows much about the kind of life she lived and the facts about her personal life. For the unversed, Sulochana Latkar appeared in around 50 Marathi films and approximately 250 Hindi films throughout her career. She gained recognition for her impactful performances in Marathi movies such as Sangte Aika (1959), Sasurvas (1946), Meeth Bhakar (1949), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), and Dhakti Jaoo (1958), where she portrayed lead roles. In Hindi cinema, Sulochana became well-known for her portrayal of motherly roles, starting with the 1959 film, Dil Deke Dekho, and continued to play such roles until 1995.

Sulochana Latkar portrayed the role of a mother to superstars of multiple generations. From Dev Anand to Sunil Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, and Jackie Shroff, Sulochana symbolised the essence of an Indian mother on the big screen for decades. Alongside Nirupa Roy, she became synonymous with the portrayal of motherly characters from the late 1950s until the early 1990s.
It was in the late 1950s when legendary filmmaker, Bimal Roy offered Sulochana the role of the timeless actress, Nutan's mother in the film, Sujata (1960). After seeking advice from fellow actresses, Durga Khote and Lalita Pawar, Sulochana decided to take on the challenge of playing a mother. To everyone’s surprise, Sulochana delivered a remarkable performance and even left Bimal Roy rightly impressed. However, the film's success led to Sulochana being typecast in motherly roles throughout her career.
At the mere age of 14, Sulochana Latkar got married. However, the name of her husband and the details about their married life is not known to anyone. The actress never talked about her married life in the media as she always preferred to live a low-key life.

While not much is known about Sulochana Latkar’s husband, there is quite a lot of information about her daughter named, Kanchan. As per reports, Kanchan didn’t follow in her mother’s footsteps and ditched a career in the film industry. The mother-daughter duo, Sulochana and Kanchan hardly made public appearances as they kept their lives under wraps.

Sulochana Latkar’s daughter, Kanchan was married to iconic theatre actor, Kashinath Ghanekar. For the unversed, Kashinath was a prominent figure in Marathi theatre and was also hailed as the first superstar of the Marathi stage. Known for his charismatic presence, Kashinath enjoyed immense popularity and was the highest-paid actor from 1960 to 1980. Apart from Marathi theatre and films, Kashinath also worked in Hindi cinema, starring in a series of movies.
It is a known fact that Sulochana Latkar left a significant mark on both Hindi and Marathi cinema with her appearances in over 300 films. As a result, Sulochana received a series of accolades for her talent, including the Padma Shri Award in 1999 and the esteemed Maharashtra Bhushan Award in 2009 from the Government of Maharashtra.
