The young actress did not even give an audition for the character, as she had lost all confidence in her acting skills. Opening up about the same in much detail, Sumbul Touqueer Khan admitted that when she came to Mumbai to make her career in the entertainment industry, she faced many rejections due to her skin colour. The actress explained how almost everyone wanted fair girls and revealed that people used to reject her because of the dark complexion of her skin.
Courtesy of all the rejections and taunts from people about her complexion, Sumbul Touqueer Khan had lost all the confidence that she had in her acting. That’s why when Imlie was offered to her, she rejected it even without even trying. By that time, Sumbul was convinced enough that she wasn’t made for lead roles because of her skin complexion. Recalling the same, she said:
"When I came to Mumbai my interest was never towards becoming an actress. Whenever I went for auditions they only wanted fair skinned actors. It was something which I never appreciated and did not like. For me colour complexion is not important. I had started to believe that if you are dark skinned you can’t be a lead heroine."

In the same interview, Sumbul Touqueer Khan also admitted that things hadn't changed overnight even after she bagged the lead role in the show, Imlie. The actress admitted that even after being selected as the lead actress for the show, she still saw many people questioning the makers’ call and saying that she was ‘kaali’ and didn’t fit well with the character. However, all the doubters and trollers went back to their caves after the massive success of Imlie and the way viewers appreciated Sumbul’s performance. Sharing her thoughts about the same, she said:
"All the heroines, if you see them all, were mostly fair. I don’t have anything against anyone but this is what I started to believe. But this stereotype broke when I bagged Imlie. When I bagged Imlie also things didn’t change instantly. People would call up and say “arre kaisi ladki ko cast kar liya, kaali hai”. Our opening TRP numbers were 2.2 and the number just went up from there it never came down till the time I was a part of it. People forgot how I looked, they just noticed my work."
