Sumona Chakravarti is one such artist who has proven it is not easy to score big in a competitive industry like showbiz, without a fair share of struggle. She started off her career at the tender age of 11, and was a part of the Aamir Khan-Manisha Koirala film, Mann in 1999. Thereafter, it was in 2011 when she achieved her breakthrough with the serial, Bade Achhe Lagte Hai. This was followed by her experimentation in the comedy genre, as she became a part of the show, Kahani Comedy Circus Ki as well as Comedy Nights With Kapil. Fast forward to now, she is an established name in the entertainment industry, and would be soon taking part in the stunt-based reality show, Khatron Ke Khiladi 14.
In an interview with the Indian Express, Sumona Chakravarti shed light on the reality of circumstances beyond the glorified image of her celebrity status. She looked back in time and reminisced the days, when she had to endure tough challenges for just purchasing her first home. Sumona mentioned that while her job doesn’t come along with a proper pay slip, she faced refusal from the banks, who were reluctant to extend a loan to her. She mentioned:
“I bought my first house when I was 26. It is a simple small apartment in Mumbai, and everyone knows the real estate here is crazy. Actors don’t have an office-structured salary slip or a fixed payment monthly. I still remember how the bank guys were reluctant to give me a loan because I had no fixed monthly salary. Somebody with a monthly salary of Rs 20,000 is a safer bet for a bank, than an actor, since it’s a high risk.”

Moving forth in the conversation, Sumona Chakravarti then remarked that the biggest achievement of her life had been to pay off her home loan, something she managed to get after much struggle. Furthermore, she took pride in sharing how she has been able to duly dodge all the setbacks of her life with grace. In her words:
“As an actor when we have EMIs to pay off, it becomes a challenge sometimes, especially in a situation like Covid. So when I was able to pay off that home loan, by far that has been my biggest achievement. You have financial setbacks, life throws massive curveballs, and I have been dodging many such ones.”
Speaking along the same lines, Sumona Chakravarti then emphasised how she feels nothing is greater for a woman other than to have a roof above their head. She spoke about her own situation and mentioned that she doesn’t worry about her marriage, as long as she has her own home and a source of income. She added:
“I always say to girls in our country that having a roof of your own is very important. I often get asked when I am settling down in life, that is what I think is called being settled where you can fulfill the criteria of roti, kapda, makaan. Rest all will come and go.”

In the concluding segment of the interview, Sumona Chakravarti explained why she chose to be a part of a stunt-based show like Khatron Ke Khiladi 14¸ considering how she had been previously associated with comedy shows and daily soaps. In retrospect, Sumona stated that she simply felt geared up to be a part of a reality show based on stunts for the first time ever.
