The popular Bollywood actor, Sanjay Dutt had reportedly served almost 42 months in Pune's Yerwada Jail after the court had convicted him for illegally possessing arms and weapons during the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. During his time inside the jail, Sanjay had completely transformed himself into a different person. From penning shayaris, working on his physique, reading lots of books, and bidding farewell to most of his bad habits, Sanjay surprised everyone with a positive change in his character after coming out of jail.
Time and again, in his interviews, Sanjay Dutt always talked about the impact of his father, late Sunil Dutt, on his life. The doting son had admitted it every now and then that it was because of him that he had managed to get out of jail, as Sunil Dutt had never lost hope for a moment. The veteran actor, late Sunil Dutt had once appeared on the iconic celebrity talk show, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, hosted by iconic actor, late Farooq Shaikh. During the course of the talk show, Sunil Dutt was accompanied by the legendary actor, Dilip Kumar and his actress-wife, Saira Banu. When Sunil Dutt was asked about the impact of Dilip Kumar and his wife, Saira Banu, the former shared an incident that speaks volumes about their close-knitted friendship. The Mother India actor had recalled how it was Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu, who had supported him when his son, Sanjay Dutt, was arrested by police after the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. Recalling the same and heaping praises on the veteran actors, Sunil Dutt had said:
"During our troubled times, jab Sanju ki problem chal rahi thi, Saira ji and Yusub saab jaise apna bachcha hota hai na. Main kayi baar, jab pareshan ho jata tha toh Yusuf saab ko milne chala jata tha toh jab main baatein karta tha toh I could see the tears in his eyes. Jaise apne bachche ko takleef ho rahi hai aise mehsoos karte the Yusuf saab aur Saira ji dono."
In the same episode, Dilip Kumar had also talked about the time when Sanjay Dutt was inside the prison and how the latter's father, Sunil Dutt was living an equally miserable life on the outside. Reflecting on the troubles, Sunil Dutt had faced during those testing times and how not even for once he had thought of giving up, Dilip Kumar praised his friend for always fighting for his son. The Mughal-E-Azam actor had stated:
"The way time tested Sunil, anyone would get upset with that, it was very moving. But he stayed firm. He would only speak to those who were his own people, and those he could trust. He stayed on his path and made his way."

When the iconic actor, Sunil Dutt had appeared on Simi Garewal's famous celebrity talk show, Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, the doting father had recalled the heartbreaking moment of seeing his son, Sanjay Dutt, being handcuffed and taken to jail. Reflecting on how painful it was for him to see his son in such a tragic state, sharing his emotions about the same, Sunil had stated:
"I remember that when his bail was cancelled, he was supposed to be taken right from the court to the jail. They were handcuffing him, and that was the first time I realised that whatever I have done for my country, it was totally futile. This is the thing which I had to see as a father. I got a little emotional."
