Sunny Deol is one of India's most admired action heroes who continues to rule the hearts of fans even after working for four decades. He is the son of veteran actor, Dharmendra, and he managed to carve his identity with popular films like Gadar, Border, Apne, Damini, and Chaalbaaz, among others. But Sunny, known for playing versatile characters, had to experience a major rough patch until Gadar 2 revived his career. Talking about the same, Sunny Deol, in his conversation with the media, hinted at moving down to the South.
Sunny Deol is one of the few top stars who doesn't hesitate to discuss his struggles in the Hindi film industry. After the success of Gadar 2, he highlighted how it took him two decades to get the right kind of film that brought him better work. Recently, at the launch event of Jaat, Sunny recalled the same and gave a fun twist to his popular dialogue from the film to reveal his intention of moving towards south films. He said:
"Ye dhai kilo ke haath ki taakat poora North dekh chuka hai. Ab South dekhega.”
Sunny discussed the success of his brother, Bobby Deol, with Animal and Aasharm and mentioned how it took years for them to achieve this kind of feat. They had to wait a long time but are happy about it. At the same time, the Border actor advised the Hindi filmmakers to learn from the South filmmakers where the script is the most significant aspect of a film. Hinting at his desire to move to the South, the 67-year-old stated:
"I wish Bollywood producers learn something from South producers. Make it Hindi cinema first, and then learn how to make it. Kya pata wahin ja ke bas jau main.”
Before Sunny Deol, filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap made a stir after he announced in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he would be leaving the Hindi film industry and moving to the south. He emphasised that the Hindi film industry has become toxic, and everyone is chasing impossible collection targets that have left little to no discussion about creativity. In his words:
"I want to stay away from film people. The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next Rs.500 or Rs.800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone. I envy them (South filmmakers). Because now, it's difficult for me to go out and experiment. Because now, it comes at a cost, which makes my producers think about profit."
Sunny Deol debuted by starring in his father, Dharmendra's directorial venture Betaab, which turned out to be a major commercial success. He later starred in films like Paap Ki Duniya, Tridev, Ghayal, Damini, Border, Gadar and more. However, after 2004, Sunny Deol faced a rough patch in his career, as he experimented with his roles in various genres, and his films failed to make an impact. Things took a turn for the actor, with his release of Gadar 2 in 2023, which brought massive success for Sunny. He now has an impressive lineup of films, including Jaat, Lahore 1947 and Border 2 in the pipeline.
