Remember how I told you that this article was going to be about relatively unknown designers? Laila Motwane is one of the unsung heroes of the fashion industry. Bollywood wives like Twinkle Khanna and Gauri Khan have been patronizing her collections for years, but hot young Bollywood starlet Kalki Koechlin recently chose to wear Laila Motwane’s lehengas for her May wedding with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
The best thing about Laila Motwane is her authenticity. She sources her fabrics and designs only from the finest artisans in the interior of the country. Her innovative colour combinations combined with her refreshingly original designs have made me her # 1 fan. Another interesting thing about her is the distinctly non designer price tag of her clothing, usually in the Rs. 6500 to Rs. 17,000 range. So you wouldn’t need to break into your piggy bank if you choose to get one of her creations.
Ritu Beri
How could any list of the world’s top designers be complete without Ritu Beri? I do not know of anyone else who can combine classic Indian magnificence with western designs the way she can. In fact, she is as synonymous with bridal couture in India as Vera Wang in the US. I don’t even want to waste any more words in describing her works, after all, she needs no introduction. Instead, feast your eyes on this.

Ankur Batra
Even the most avid readers of fashion mags would be scratching their heads at this name. if you haven’t heard of him, then it does not mean that you are necessarily out of date or totally clueless about fashion. However, if you have heard of him, then I congratulate you, because only the true cognoscenti have a clue about who Ankur Batra is. Head designer of the label Ecru – Brides by Design, Ankur Batra is not like other designers. He does not show at fashion shows and nor does he court the limelight. He does not even meet with potential customers! He is super exclusive, and the only way to get a look at his collection is through a successful referral from an existing client. Fair warning though: he only meets new clients once he is sure that they can afford him. So check out these pics and drool.
