Twinkle Khanna has donned many hats so far and has done so effortlessly. From being a popular actress in the 90s to an award-winning author now, Twinkle transitioned into both careers seamlessly, winning hearts along the way. However, let's not forget the most important roles she plays — that of a loving wife to her husband, Akshay, and a doting mom to her kids, Aarav and Nitara. Recently, the actress-author opened up about her parenting hacks when it came to overcoming social and cultural biases, fondly recalling one anecdote about Nitara, in particular, which she saw as a triumphant moment.
Twinkle Khanna appeared for a candid interaction with FICCI FLO, during which she opened up about her parenting journey. The actress-turned-author admitted that mothering her first child was more of a leaning phase. According to Twinkle, the firstborn tends to serve as a 'manual' for parents because they're still figuring out what they should and shouldn't do. Twinkle can be quoted as saying:
"I learnt a lot with my first child. And I think your first child tends to be that manual. You experiment a little bit on that child."
Further in the conversation, Twinkle Khanna discussed the colour bias that still existed in India, recalling how her kids were compared based on their skin tones despite being siblings. Twinkle then elaborated on the hacks she employed to ensure her daughter, Nitara wouldn't grow up feeling inferior just because her skin colour was darker than her brother Aarav's. Twinkle said:
"With my second one, what I realised was that… I thought she looked like a normal Indian girl and there was always this comparison between her and her brother in skin colour or things like that. Things that exist in our country. And I decided that I am going to make sure that she believes she is absolutely wonderful, so if she has a unibrow, I told her that look you are as beautiful as Frida Kahlo, and she was as amazing and so are you. If she is brown, I would tell her that her skin is golden."
Twinkle Khanna also shared a little anecdote about Nitara, which she tagged as her 'proudest moment.' The little tale proved that the super mommy's efforts in ensuring her kiddo didn't fall victim to society's unrealistic beauty standards had paid off. Twinkle recounted a day when Nitara was going to the beach with her big brother but decided to not to wear any sunscreen. Twinkle recalled:
"So eventually, one day, I think my proudest moment was when she was sitting with her brother and we were going to the beach and he was putting on sunblock. She said 'I don't really need so much sunblock because my skin is greater than yours'. And she said a white T-shirt gets dirty but a brown T-shirt doesn't. You can't see it so I am greater. So I thought that was a triumph."
For the uninitiated, Twinkle Khanna is also the author of her very own column in The Times Of India. In the same, she had once talked about a callous remark from a relative that had a serious impact on her daughter, Nitara. According to Twinkle, the little one had wanted to give up her lessons for fear of getting tanned and also expressed a desire to look like her brother, Aarav. Twinkle penned the same and mentioned the relative's remark which was, "She is so cute but not as fair as her brother!"
