Vicky Kaushal has been one of those actors who has consistently set the bar higher with his successive performances. From being a part of a number of film genres to his on-point expressions and suave dance moves stealing the show, Vicky has proved his mettle at par. Despite being the son of an eminent action master in Bollywood, Sham Kaushal, his journey in acting hasn’t been smooth, and he, in fact, had to struggle for a long time before his big break. However, for the deeply humble and grounded actor, it had been his father’s continuous motivation to make a name for himself that had kept him fuelled.
In a recent interaction with Raj Shamani on his podcast, Vicky Kaushal recalled the kind of struggles his father, Sham Kaushal had to go through, in order to earn a stable livelihood in a competitive field of the film world. Vicky revealed that his father had an MA in English degree but still was jobless. And in such a pitiful condition, Sham decided he would end his life, leaving his parents worried. Vicky narrated:

“Dad came to Mumbai in 1978. He had an MA in English literature, but he was still jobless. One day, after drinking with his friends, he declared that he wants to die. My grandfather became very concerned, so he sent him to Mumbai. My grandfather had a small kirane ki dukaan in our village in Punjab. That's where my parents are from. We had no land back there.”

Talking more about his father, Sham Kaushal’s struggles, Vicky shared that after the former came to Mumbai, he was even ready to work off as a sweeper in the big city, since he was sure that nobody back in the village would offer him any kind of work. He shared:
“In Mumbai, my dad was willing to work as a sweeper even, because he knew that nobody in the village would get to know. My dad's youth was full of struggles. There's no job security in this field. While you're working on one project, you're wondering if you'll find something else next."
Continuing further in his revelation, Vicky mentioned that when it came to his case, his parents always wanted him to have a secured job, so that he doesn’t go through the same uncertainty in life and career that they had gone through. However, despite their efforts and wishes, Vicky was in no mood to abandon his passion for a secured job, and ended up being a part of the film world, which has a dynamic nature for jobs. In his words:
“My parents were very happy with the idea of me having a regular job. My family was genuinely very happy that finally someone is going to have a stable income, job security, off days... He was so happy. He felt like his struggles had finally paid off. But I just knew that I couldn't do a conventional job. I had an offer letter, I'd passed out with good marks. But I knew that I'd become depressed if I went ahead with it.”

Previously, in another of his interviews with a leading daily, Vicky Kaushal remembered his own struggles to make a name in Bollywood and expressed a sense of gratitude towards it. He recalled asking for work in small roles for films and advertisements, and he would end up being happy with the meagre remuneration that these opportunities would fetch for him.
