Vicky Kaushal and Sunny Kaushal's father, Sham Kaushal is a famous action director. He has worked in many films, including Dangal, Bajirao Mastani and many more. Sham has lived a humble life, and after working very hard in the industry, he etched a special place in millions of hearts with his works. However, he was once diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2003. But after giving a strong fight against the deadliest disease, he became a survivor. Now, in an interview, Sham opened up about his experience, which is simply unmissable.
In a candid chat with Rajshri Unplugged, Sham Kaushal recalled the time when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. He revealed that just after returning from the Ladakh shoot schedule of Farhan Akhtar’s film, Lakshya, Sham felt a lot of complications in his stomach. Thus, he got admitted to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai, where he underwent a small surgery and biopsy. And after the cancer diagnosis, his doctors told him he wouldn't survive for long. Sham revealed:

“As soon as I got back, there were a lot of complications in my stomach. Some time in October, I had to get admitted in Nanavati Hospital. The doctors said that I won’t survive."

In the same conversation, Sham mentioned that though he accepted the fact that he wouldn't survive, he didn't let his hope die. At that time, Vicky was just 15 years old and his brother, Sunny 14. Talking about how his sons were only teenagers, the doting daddy prayed to God not to make him a weak person. He shared:
“I accepted that fact that I won’t survive, so I prayed to God that I am not unhappy, I am 48. I started from nothing and I have achieved a lot. You take me away but if you are going to save me, then don’t make me a weak person. I can’t live like a weak person."
Further, Sham recalled that his prayers were heard, and gradually, his fears disappeared. For the unversed, he underwent a few surgeries, and after 50 days of hospitalisation, Sham was discharged. Following this, the action director gradually recovered. Calling those days the best ones of his life, he mentioned how he soon get back to work. He won all the awards for his films after 2003, and his kids also became successful after that. He concluded:
“After they said I won’t survive, I saw the best days of my life. I won all the awards after 2003. My best films came after that. My kids became successful after that."

Earlier in an interview with The Times Of India, Sham had opened up about giving up on his life. He mentioned how he tried to return the signing amount of Anurag Kashyap’s film, Black Friday. However, Sham mentioned that the filmmaker decided to wait for him to recover. In the same interview, he also revealed that once he had thought about ending his life by jumping off the third floor because there was no chance of his recovery. However, as God had some other plans for Sham, he is now in a better state altogether. Sham had said:
“I thought there’s no chance of me surviving. I had even decided that I would end my life by jumping off the third floor because I couldn’t live like that."
