The ongoing 16th season of IPL (Indian Premier League) is delivering everything that fans expected from the world's biggest cricket league. From outstanding chases, individual performances, complete dominance, and many fights, this season has already ticked all the boxes so far. On May 1, 2023, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) locked horns with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). RCB batted first and gave a target of 126 runs to LSG. Unfortunately, the poor run of form continues for LSG as they were dismissed at 108 runs in 19.5 overs and even lost their key player, KL Rahul, to injury.
The 18-run victory was a big win for Royal Challengers Bangalore as, in recent times, we have seen Lucknow Super Giants becoming their arch-rivals. For the unversed, it was only last month when LSG had beaten RCB at their home ground. After the match ended, it was Gautam Gambhir, who celebrated his team’s win with a ‘finger on the lips’ gesture towards the hosts in attendance at the Chinnaswamy stadium. So it would be fair to say that RCB is having the last laugh in their rivalry at the moment. However, it was more about Virat Kohli vs Gautam Gambhir, the two former Indian teammates, who had an ugly spat after the match.

The global mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Gautam Gambhir shares a controversial history with Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) star man, Virat Kohli. It was back in 2013 when Gautam used to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he indulged in a series of fights with Virat. On May 1, 2023, we saw glimpses of the same old rivalry once again after Gautam stormed onto the field after his team’s defeat and confronted Virat.
While they were engaged in a war of words, their respective teammates took them away from each other. Well, it all started after Virat Kohli celebrated Krunal Pandya’s wicket with a flying kiss gesture and told the crowd to keep cheering. After the incident ended, Gautam Gambhir went into the dressing room, while Naveen-ul-Haq was spotted having an intense handshake with Virat. The Afghanistani cricketer was arguing with Virat over everything that had happened during the match.

As soon as the match ended, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) punished Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir and Naveen-ul-Haq for their brawl after the IPL match between RCB and LSG. The cricketing board fined the cricketers of their 100% whopping match fees. Regarding their respective fees, Virat lost his match fees of Rs. 1.07 crores, while Gautam lost Rs. 25 lakhs. However, BCCI gave some relief to Naveen-ul-Haq, who was only charged with a 50% fine and lost Rs. 1.79 lakhs. Virat and Gautam committed a Level 2 offence, while Naveen was guilty of a Level 1 offence as per the IPL Code of Conduct.
