Waheeda Rehman is one of the most successful divas of her time in the Hindi film industry. She was hailed for her breathtaking looks and incomparable acting mettle. She has contributed to over 90 films, which include some classic works, such as Guide, Pyaasa, Kagaz Ke Phool, Chaudvin Ka Chand among so many others. A Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan recipient, she has also been bestowed with countless Filmfare and National Awards. Moreover, she is also remembered for having worked with some of the most eminent stalwarts of Hindi cinema, including the filmmaker, Guru Dutt and superstar, Dev Anand.
In a recent interview with Radio Nasha, Waheeda Rehman opened up on an unknown anecdote from her glorious career in films. The diva recalled the shooting of her film, Solva Saal, where, in a particular scene, her character’s clothes were soaking wet and she was supposed to change them. However, Waheeda mentioned that she did not like the kind of clothes she was given, since they were too revealing. As a result, she blatantly chose to wear an outfit that made her comfortable, and came out. Sharing how it angered the filmmaker, to the extent that he called for a pack up of the shoot, Waheeda mentioned:
“I was given a costume that I did not want to wear. The director said if you are not comfortable then don’t wear it but when you come on the set, you should be happy. So when I came on the set, I wore what made me comfortable. The director was furious. He said this your second or third movie, and it will be your last one because you have too many conditions. The director was so angry that he packed up for the day.”

Speaking more about that specific ordeal, Waheeda then shared how her co-star for that film, Dev Anand came out in her support. The veteran actress revealed that Dev Anand made the director understand that such revealing kind of clothes do not suit the character that Waheeda was playing, since it was a portrayal of a village girl. Adding how from that day onwards, she felt that Dev Anand would always help her out in times of need, Waheeda revealed:
“Dev was sweet. He took my side. He told the director that what she is saying is absolutely right. Her character is a shy girl. Her name in the movie is Lajwanti. She shouldn’t be wearing revealing clothes in this scene. What she was saying was right and you got angry for no reason. I was very relieved that Dev was in my corner. I was so happy that after that day, I felt like whenever there would be a problem, I would go to Dev and he would sort it out.”
In one of her previous appearances on Arbaaz Khan’s show, The Invincibles, Waheeda Rehman spoke about her initial days in the film industry and shared how eminent filmmaker, Guru Dutt felt doing a mistake by casting her for the film, Pyaasa. The diva reminisced how Guru Dutt was told by someone that she was bekaar and unsuited for such a role, almost like a wooden doll.

In the same interaction, Waheeda Rehman revealed that quite early in her career, a film distributor had asked her frequent filmmaker, Guru Dutt to suggest a change of name for her for working in films. Sharing how she would never want to change her name under any circumstances, Waheeda had said:
“Excuse me, it is my own name. My parents have given it to me, why should I change my name? I am ready to work hard, but a few things about which I don't feel comfortable, I will not do it because I won't be able to.”
