Michael Pennington, the critically acclaimed British actor, has died at the age of 82. He was best known for playing the role of 'Moff Jerjerrod' in Star Wars: Episode VI- Return of the Jedi. Several news outlets, such as The Telegraph and TMZ, confirmed his death on May 10, 2026. Michael had spent more than seven decades building inspiration across film, TV, and theater. Although most global fans remember him from his role in the Star Wars franchise, he was also one of the best Shakespearean actors and directors. Let us know more about him.

What caused Michael Pennington's death at 82?

Until now, the official cause of Michael Pennington's death remains unknown. His family and news outlets have yet to confirm the same. But according to reports, he died on May 10, 2026, after dealing with multiple health struggles in his final days. Despite the lack of specific medical details, some reports claimed that the actor has been "very poorly for some time." In turn, many fans and theatre insiders claimed that he was too ill in the last few years. Therefore, he avoided attending some public events.

Some reports also claim that Michael was living at Denville Hall in Northwood, London. He allegedly lived at a well-known care home meant for retired actors and entertainers. Several legendary British performers long used the residence in their final years. But despite his deteriorating health, the actor was deeply respected. Interestingly, he often spoke about gaining weight and physical decline when discussing his stage portrayal of 'King Lear'. In fact, the role became one of his career-defining performances.

Michael Pennington was born on June 7, 1943. He began his acting career in the 1960s, and one of his earliest screen appearances was in the 1965 BBC miniseries, The War of the Roses. Over time, he became one of the most popular actors in British Theatre. At the same time, he co-founded the English Shakespeare Company in 1986. Eventually, Michael became an Honorary Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His work with Shakespearean drama earned him much praise and attention. He even authored several books on theatres. Michael was also seen in major screen projects, including Michael Foot opposite Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady. In fact, he famously played 'Sherlock Holmes' in The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
