Waheeda Rehman Recalls Why Her Father Thought She Was Going Mad And Asked Her Mother To Keep A Check

Iconic actress, Waheeda Rehman, who has delighted her fans with some astounding performances has made a niche for herself in the entertainment industry despite the fact that she had no godfather. She was born in a Tamil and Urdu-speaking family in Chengalpattu-Tamil Nadu. Her father, Mohammed Abdur Rehman, was a District Magistrate by profession and that had led to his posting in various places. However, he had passed away in 1948, when Waheeda was in her teens.

After that Waheeda Rehman had followed her passion of becoming an actress and was quite a popular face in the Tamil film industry. It was then that Guru Dutt had discovered her talent and had decided to launch her in Bollywood. Thereby, the journey of the veteran actress had started through Guru Dutt's production as she made her debut in the film, CID. During the interaction, Twinkle Khanna asked her about her dream to be a doctor and Waheeda Rehman confirmed the same. She said, ''Yes, I wanted to be a doctor. In those days, especially in Muslim families, the only respectable profession was doing medicine. So, I was like let’s do medicine only. Even today I love reading medical journals and about different treatments.”

Going further in the interview, Waheeda Rehman revealed that she used to make faces in front of the mirror which made her father think that she was going mad. In her words, ''My mother told me that I used to make faces. I was very expressive and made funny faces. I would stand in front of the mirror and make faces. So my father told my mother to check whether I was going mad (laughs). One day, my father asked me why I was doing this, so I told him that I want to make people laugh and I want to make people cry. That time, even I didn’t know that I wanted to act. Everything in my life, my career, my marriage, all of it happened, I didn’t plan or go after it.”

When Twinkle Khanna further enquired, “How did he flirt, did he say you're beautiful?”, Waheeda Rehman replied, “No, he didn't say that. When we were discussing Guide, there was Chetan Anand, the Hindi director, and Tad Danielewski, the English director. Both of them didn't want me, they rejected me. They didn't like my face, maybe. And also they said, ‘Your English is not so good'. But Dev said, ‘I don’t care, my Rosie is only Waheeda'.”
